Went out in the afternoon with Elder Ballard to visit some of his friends and get on to the ropes. 7th Started out Tues. with only outward boldness, inwardly I was fearful ghost. First three houses was run off with a broom the last lady threatening to have me and my companion arrested. Was indeed glad to have an excuse to go to Portland in the afternoon. Went down and let Ben Selling (son of Judah) ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p016.jpg) feel in my pockets and I told me to take a raincoat, grip and umbrella. He could well afford to offer an umbrella for they are the chief crop raised in Portland. W[---] Mutual at night. Wed 8" Had a pretty good day, surprized by a lady buying the book of Mormon and scattered out a few little books. Thurs. 9" Rained, like a stampede, all day and little done. Friday and Saturday it made an awful attempt at snowing but could not pile it up. Had an inch Friday night, but wilted like a lily, Saturday. Sunday 12" Was on hand at church went thru the usual routine of business ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p017.jpg) Was surprized to find that the branch had over 300 Mormons, but some cold ones. Two more new beans to boil over the spiritual heat and all six of us made our initial field debut. Mon. 13. The rain held us within the mantel all day, I mortally dread this tracting business and am not the first to suggest the time to leave. Most of my time spent studying. Went see the Scotchman Tues 14"—Wed put in a good forenoon work I had some good conversations with women who have lost faith in the sincerity of churches and ministers left some [---]le books with them. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p018.jpg) Tues after we boarded the car for Portland, stopped at Mission House but no one in office. read the belated Desert News and transferred to Portland got a bible a bite to eat and head for Mutual. The most of the day was spent at chapel of Holman's with the body. Most of the Elder's were present in an out. Elders Seager, Talbot, Soloman an my self lost a dime and time in going to Majestic Theatre. After this Elder Seager and I began making tracks with the heels toward the city, the toes eastward bound. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p020.jpg) Stopped Mission house for some books and excited Sisters Strong & Christensen over Higher Criticism and Evolution also showed my lack of knowledge of these subjects. Had a very cozy chat with them, we decided that the church school system was a failure judging from effects on myself, or the result in spite of good opportunities. Landed in Lents after two days vacation and not very well healed for active work. Nov 17 Friday forenoon we swindled away in letter writing, report making and general red tap matters but threatening ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p021.jpg) to give the work a cyclone shove this afternoon. I neglected to state in my Friday's report that Elder H. A. Benson accompanied the body of Elder Sessions to his home at Bountiful Utah. The missionaries of the conferences tendered their respects in the form of a beautiful magnolia leaf wreath. This marks 14 days of 96 Siberia house each in since I landed in Portland and not a stingy scratch from home or any where else. I will be ancient in two years if the weeks coming are so drawn out and stretched as the last two. Help me compress them. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p022.jpg) In the after noon we chased over Eastern Lents gathering up books and tackling Germans and Norwergens. Spent a few minutes at Lents reading room and had "Ancestry of the bible" sent up from Portland. Nov. 18. We managed to put in pretty good time tracting. I took my stand in Saganaus Heights. Bro Luth from shear pity took Elder Seager and myself home for supper. We ought to be careful he's only a new convert, we may drive him out by eating him out. Had a very nice visit with the family, the girls, (little girls, very little) Regular Sunday night services. Returned to Lents by 10:00 after having stood the days exciment nobly Nov 20. Out a little earlier than usual 7, o'clock. Went down to Christensen's and arranged for a cottage meeting and called on Sr. Peterson. In the the afternoon we tramped on Saqinaw Heights. Met with fan ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p025.jpg) process in the way of being able to converse with people. Met a Catholic a fair representative of the church she said if God himself was to tell her she was in the wrong church she would not believe it, she would tell him he was joking and to ask the Pope. Would not accept any literature. A Lutheran lady, who said she could not accept Mormism even if was the truth. This is the great trouble. They are not willing to make an sacrifices or lose any worldly prestige. It seems as though we were butting our heads into a stone wall for all the results we get. An insurmountable barrier exists between most people and an ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p026.jpg) unpopular religion but it's the fault of the age, I should be in their same frame of mind perhaps had the same environments surrounded me from infancy to manhood. Lents saw us about 12:30 a bad example. Haven't heard from home yet where have they gone visiting. Nov. 21" Tried to crack up the cold that has shackled my head kept my feet under the stove all day. Ventured down to Mutual. Nothing of a curious turn was uncovered except Bro Palmer trying to justify the unions in all their outrageous attempts to control the earth. Meeting beginning at 7:30 all speaking, but their good effect being entirely over come by my crudeness. Nov. 23. Take leave of Elder Seager very reluctantly. He is a man in whom there is no guile, very quite un assuming, slow to make friends, slower to lose them. A man of strong and sane convictions, well informed and equal to the best in gospel conversations. Direct and to the point, never flatters anyone to make friends or to sooth. Met two other Elders, Hatch & ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p030.jpg) Roper at Mission house who will leave in the afternoon for Seattle after shedding a few tears with the Portland Elders & sisters, we whistled off for Seattle. Elder F Morgan being my sleeping partner. Arrived in Seattle 4:30 and finally located Pres. Dunn's room after several inquiries. Was given the wrong number at Portland. Arranged for a room and went down town for the evening. Burned an hour and a half off at Pantages vaudeville. See some of the Australian promulgators but Houston is taking on the burgh. Made a great effort and got to church by 10 A.M. After Sunday School, we repaired our vitals at Wing's Cafeteria. The was shocked by getting word from home first in three weeks. Thanks Hattie and Frank. Tried to locate the nature missionaries again, but no success. Meeting was again held at 7:00 and here we bored the holes for first round in our oratorical ladder. Had a small sized belt. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p034.jpg) After meeting the Scandahoovian who was pardoned, was accompanied to the depot by a number of the Elders. Again we waited for the New Zealanders till 11:45, at which time they were to leave for Vancouver but again we missed the saints. Mon. 27 We started out on our first Seattle job. Elder Hatch went with me while Elder Roper was initiated by Pres Dunn We had fair success up on Harrison Street. Bro Hatch's teeth ached he was so anxious I was blushing with anticipation. But we left just as Elder Dunn and Green turned the corner. Another night the street transients of Seattle were undistubed. She invited me in we looked over her bible she told me with tears in her eyes of her work with convicts. Invited me back to take brunch and pray with her. The remainder of the morning passed with only one absolute door slam. In the afternoon we studied and watched the rain. I felt better about taking the square out at ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p038.jpg) Wings Cafeteria. We now moved toward a cottage meeting at the Finest Wat[---] that I have been priveledged to meet. The evening was pleasantly whiled out singing and talking. I fully realized the drawback one is who can't sing, besides the embarrassment endured, Oh you canary. Nov. 30 Thanksgiving Day Had the big argument on polygamy on ariving, it hasn't all soaked in yet. Oh Dear rescue me! Going to destroy turkey at Sister Long's ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p039.jpg) We walk up Queen Anne Hill to Mrs Lowe's not Mrs Long. Received a very hearty welcome and thoroughly installed a member of the family. They are not members of the church that is the parents They have a daughter who is in. Thru association of the Elders they have come to see that the church has been misrepresented. Had a very interesting discussion with Young Mr. Lowe on the cost of living the source of wealth and the outcome. He is at the top of the painting profession but preferrs a farm life if he could get one. Had the largest turkey in Seattle ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p040.jpg) and every other describable holiday dish. We leisurally hashed out an hour at the table and strained our belt buckle— The eating was resumed at 9 o'clock a dainty cold lunch being served We returned to our rooms having had enough to be truly thankful. Dec 1st I went out to Fremont to keep Elder Roper company till Brs Nelson comes down. We put in a good forenoon tracking. Had a good talk with a methodist lady till she learned I was a mormon then she ordered me off. The next door was slammed unceremoniously in my face. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p041.jpg) At the next door an old lady told me of her unprejudiced study of the mormon question and the reliable (?) source of her information and her unqualified prayer was that Brigham Young should have the only seat in hell. But she was too broadminded to talk with a mormon. Blinded by her own conceit. In the afternoon I went in search of Mrs Edson a friend of Elder Allred's. Mrs Edson had left but the family invited me in soon made me feel quite at home but on hearing that I was a represative of mormonism, the kindly feeling was turned ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p042.jpg) to coldness and bitterness. I had a hot time, they doing principally all the talking. Polygamy, Prohibiti[--] Smoots Wives, Blood atonement and magazine articles being the subject. At first their attitude was one of ridicule and prejudice but before I left they treated me with respect, I left the B of Mormon with them and asked to return. After spending 2 hrs and 30 min in a hornets nest I was invited back and think I will sell them some books. They are people of indominable wills arbitrary and of strong convictions, living clean ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p043.jpg) lives and making no concessions. But are such as Jos Smith speaks of, "They are the honorable who are blinded by the craftiness of men." Fri. Night spent in study. Sat. 2" We have run out of tracks so come into Seattle to fix up records and do a multitude of small things spend the afternoon at Public Library The Elders bunched and came down like a wolf in the night upon the Wing Cafeteria. After a good square out we went down and inspect the Union Market. Certan[-]ly a sight. Another night spent at Fremont. Dec 4. Mon. My big day at tracking. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p047.jpg) Leave some books and have a number of good conversations. Came in to Seattle for mail and supper. Dec 5 Tues Started in right at the tracting business but Elders Dunn and Nelson strike us about 12:00 and I come back to town with Bro Dunn takes me back. We visit the Dock Curio Shop. Famous Idian collections and Alaskan relics and Sea animals. We go up to Sister Webbs for supper and treated royally. The little girls are the cutest singers yet seen. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p048.jpg) after mutual we turn our lights off for the night. Dec. 6" Wed. We got out in the Baylestone district this morning and start the pains of tracking to asking again. A fancy residence side. Meet a great many servants. Got a Jap ready to be baptized in the Turk, but we could find the stopper, Ruin on to a mormon Mrs (S[---]son) in a swell appartment house. Has been away from Salt Lake six years and never found the church. "And Some fell upon stony places." All after noon was spent looking for furniture for the little farce ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p049.jpg) to be put on. It was a dream lugging the stuff up the stairs for church. Near Evening Elder Davenport and my self were delegated to get a Christmas tree. We flounder around in the underbrush. Carried two little spruce fellows back. Had supper at Mrs Milligans and then we came on down forcing the Street car con to let us on with our forest. Stayed out to the meeting house and watched a mediocre practice till bed time. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p050.jpg) Dec 7" Thurs I ploded out to Harvard Ave to start scattering that "detestible" Mormon Literature. Hated to touch those swell joints but had to do it. The first lady treated me very civilly till I gave her an idea of our differing from other churches. She didn't forget to tell me how broadminded she was but she was her own accusser. Would not allow me to leave any book. I worked till noon finding every one in a Christmas turmoil, too busy to bother with a little thing like the salvation of their souls. The after noon I spent in the Library studying the history of the English ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p051.jpg) at night. And one less day to dwell upon the earth. Then we'll have things transpire Dec 8 The day is ended rain prevented us from making any tracting, but work at the Church preparing for the Relief Society fair. Elder Daley also comes in on his way home, has been laboring at Vancouver. We exchange photos. A very fine Elder. The preliminary program and fair at the church were in every way success[--]. We had a great many friends out. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p052.jpg) The more people get acquainted with us, our lives, and see our motives then they begin to respect us and they see that the people of the church are sincere and that leads them to investigate. Elder Dunn Discusses the "Need of Mormonism". Mon 11 I hit the tracting district for two hours have a fine talk with a [---], ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p056.jpg) she was too pretty to pass by, was invited down some night to see her husband. In the after noon went visiting with Elder Dunn, he took me out to see Mrs Marley, a friend investigator treated very cordially and invited to come again. All the Elder of the Seattle branch with the exception of Elder Dunn met and had street meeting, my first attempt (offence). We had a pretty fair crowd till I started it. Oh you new Elders! We held forth in the mist of a ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p057.jpg) half dozen other factions. Ye poor street walkers of Seattle when will ye be unmolested. Tues 12" Regular tracting business with mutual in the evening. First night alone. Elder Dunn left for Tacoma in the morning. Wed. 13" A little Late arising, spend the forenoon in the Library, but begin up on & forward in the afternoon with the literature. The first part of the afternoon I was treated with only passing decency but I touched an Egyptian house (gypsies). I told them who I was and the lady ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p058.jpg) said enthusiastically "Come right in, come right in, take for your coat," I was into the parlor and seated before I sensed it. Her husband came up and shook my hand heartily. He had met Elder Dunn Brady, and Larson and also had travelled widely in Utah from 1875-82. He was well acquainted with Brigham Young and all the early pioneers. Spoke very highly of the Mormons and would like to go to Utah. He is also a cousin to Gypsie Smith. Told me more of early Utah history than I ever new before, ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p059.jpg) told me of the Mountain Meadow Massacre and all other troubles. Invited to stop for lunch and to return. A nice old fellow to chin with. We hold another meeting at night on the street but too cold to get people to stop. Wed night I go out and spent the night with Elder Criddle and Morgan at Green Lake. Thurs spent the forenoon tracting and then hunted up Bro Walker to tack a little hide on my soles. After spending about three hours in a stuffy little shop waiting, We Elders Criddle, Morgan and myself came into town. Held another street meeting ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p060.jpg) with but little fame. Had the long talks with a theosophist and Christ Scientist, but they knew too much bible for me, one time that a poor ignorant Elder didn't win a loud victory over the fallen learned. Friday 15th Had a treacherous cold today, hung around the Library and tried to cure it. Presented a Book of Mormon to Library for the Circulation dept. But could not get it on the shelf since it would not be read enough to guarantee its. But it is rather inconsistent to have three volumes of rank anti-Mormon literature on the shelf, for people ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p061.jpg) to get hold of. If books are read why not let the question be given a quare deal. Will call on the Librarian again. Saturday 16" Every body to busy cleaning the cobwebs and bed bugs out to give ear to a trifling plan of Salvation. Finish up Harvard Ave and look over the fire Dept. Elder Seager (president elect), Bawdlin and Hill were ushered in by Pres Ballard. The other fellows hold a street meeting. I mail off a little & m[--] junk amist a cloud of grief. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p062.jpg) Sun 17 I am delegated to meet Elder Dunn, who is returning from Tacoma and rush him up to the 9 o'clock warming bee. Here we are fairly seared, good and rare by Pres. Ballard for our negligence. We all resolve to push our impositions on the people with greater vigor. Sunday school came with More trouble than usual. Elder Dunn was appointed to give the lecture on Authority, previously given to Bro. Fritzse. Bro Fritzie had not been notified and was going around like a mexican bull. He refused to be pacified or hear explanations. "Oh you jealousies." ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p063.jpg) Sunday after noon following a "square out" at Wings we visited docks and went on board an English ship, being loaded with flour and coal, bound for China and Japan. Had a long talk with an English apprentice who told of the system of getting seaman. Each fellow signs up for four years under English laws to work four years with out remuneration, clothes himself and at the end of contract, he can take one of three examinations the skipper's 1st or 2nd Mate's, After taking the exam, he can return to the sea at any time at a wage of 9 to 13 pounds per month. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p064.jpg) Mon. 18 Went out with the Salvation recipes again, Met Mrs Blogett a Baha, who belongs to an organization who believe Christ is on Earth. He is a Persian by birth, and has been imprisoned in Egypt for 40 yrs but is out now She tells me how broadminded and advanced she is, well acquainted with the cursed Mormons and their corrupt principles. Had quite a talk with her, left a Cowley with her. Will see more of her. I asked her if in studying the Mormon religion she had not done it with a predetermination to disbelieve and criticize. She acted a little guilty. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p065.jpg) Called on Gypsie Smith had a chat and viewed his favorite daughter. She's a peach, just a little dark. In the afternoon I went down to call on Bro Peterson. We were going out to shrieve the saints and exhort them to come truth with a good sized tenth. But fail to make connections with U. S. commissioner as he has gone to Everett. Spent the Evening at the library. Tues—Dec 19" Went out tracting as usual but people didn't seem to know me very well. Scattered lots of literature and covered a good deal of ground. Back early and attempted a little ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p066.jpg) letter writing till Elder Seager sent me out to the receive the Icecream for the farewell of Dunns and Bodily's. Wasted the time till the affair begun. Had a good deal of trouble getting the Icecream up. The saints assembled to shed a few false tears and say their accustomed regrets, it was worse than a mock funeral, all but in sister Lowe's case. I served the frozen mush to them, ate much and suffered all night. All leave about 10:30 having satisfied them selves that the Elders returning home were satisfied of tears. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p067.jpg) Wed 20. We get off a little early to see the prodigals off for homes. Sister Lowe and Knowlton are there at depot supporting each other. An unruly tear or two wends its way down from sister Lowes bring springs. She will not leave till the train pulls out. Then I draw a confession from her on the Idaho question. Tell her I know all about it and she come right with the story. Twas cruel but lots of fun to see her grieve. Now if Dunn don't stick it will be a bad thing for the branch. Her folks, not mormons, are wrapped up in the [--]alt. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p068.jpg) How we got our bible O. T. written in Hebrew N. After two hours traveling, I hit off towards the Colman docks looking brother Peterson. After taking a swell feed and reading a bunch of Irish notes we start off in the wilderness towards Myler. They are a family of "should be" mormons but have fallen away and very lukewarm. Nice, big hearted people but have neglected their religious duties and are now entirely numb on the question of religion. On returning to Bro Peterson house, we find Davenport and Mrs Morn and sweet heart. After talking religion for one hour to a dogmatic Luthern we wend our way home. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p071.jpg) [---] Seager thinks I roll in pretty [---] Thurs 2-3" Rather an uneventful day. Had an early call from Sister Milligan who asked for one of us to go to Fremont and get 20 lb [---] peanuts. The lot fell to me. Had the peanut butter process explained to me and had a very nice talk with Mr Dolphin. Has a peculiar eye medicine which he has concocted. Also sell him a Book of Mormon, Apostacy and a Durant. Arrive a little late with the peanut but help them sack them to make up. Had Miss Lowe offer another confession very touching affair. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p072.jpg) It was now too late to go out tracking so went down to Peterson's office as we were again going out teaching. He first take us to a swell cafe (I and the other office hand) and order the big dinner. He is too much heart. We then start for our people who live out south. Call in on Fritzie before going to Farley's. From there a 20 minute walk landed us at Farley's. Mr Farley is doing the Xmas shopping but have a nice little chat with Mrs Farely. She is an eastern girl who had never been a member but he came from a Mormon family but just got slack and lost intrest. Friendly, but cold to ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p073.jpg) necessity of living an active spiritual life. After many know the truth they fall away. They live so far away from the church that its quite a sacrifice for them to make in order to come out always Get back a little late again. Friday Dec 22" After breakfast we go to the Northern Pacific office and get our clergy fixed up. Then we climb a topless hill to get to our tracting district. I first call in on an auto man of the Lozier car and talk futility for half an hour. He is absolutely cold on the subject of religion. But very interesting to talk to leave a Durant. The rest of the day is monotonous. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p074.jpg) Had long talk with an Italian Tailor. He feels that the Italians are disrespected by the American and the English Showed me that our civilization was due to the Latin world. Could not Interest him in religion at all. Very ant[---]tory fellows & talk and like to see one as patriotic. At night a big Xmas affair is held in the Church. A large outside crowd is present and is a success in the way of a program. Have quite a job help people down the stairs as the new ones are just being put in. The Hawleyants is stalled for a good while. Alvin and Elder Field are over from Tacoma and I irratate the proprietors by blowing out the fuse! ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p076.jpg) Sat. Dec 23"/11. Elder Seager dispatched me out toward lake Washington and then he goes to clean the littered church. I start in on Nagel Place from Denny Way south. The weather was casting blue smoke around the corners it was so cold. I slipped up to a swell appartment house and slipped a few tracts into their mail boxes and make a clean breast of it. Then I talk as long as possible to the pruner of the Lincoln park shubbery as long as possible. Learn something about park system, and some new bushes. Leave a tract with him and wander with an ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p077.jpg) invite to call around again. We certainly feel like blessing one who will talk reasonably about religion or in fact talk kindly to a Mormon about any thing. From here I hit up on 10th Ave. But people are again too busy to give ear to an Elder of Israel. After three hours of it I hunt the Library and study the "Second Advent of Christ's Coming." The ungodly are again made to give ear to us on Occidental & Washington Street. That was my third attempt and a cursed poor one. I have got to get some thing in my head before I give it out. Get busy. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p078.jpg) Sunday Dec 24"/11. Pres Seager rouses us about 6:00 He leaves for Tacoma on the 7:00 boat and I try a morning bath. Then my Sunday school lesson gets a good drubbing. A mighty slim attendance at Sunday School. A little snow is the cause. Bro Page sees our condition and asked us out for dinner. Argue Socialism and Unionism if he finds hes wrong he'll begin to argue from your side and try to force you off, will never acknowledge one point against him. My lucky day at the Post Office. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p079.jpg) After evening services, Young Knowlton comes down with me to bunk. Don't let me forget, we are presented by Pres. Elder Musser, who converted her, is communicating with her, so he says. She is to be the instrument in the hands of God in bringing the sealed plates forth. Dr Masser is also talking to her. Monday night she vacated her house after a spirit told her it was to be dynamited. The first signs of the affair came at a Relief meeting at Sr. Webbs last Thurs. Feb 1st. She talked of spirits and said that the Lord wanted to talk with them. After they all took hold of hands, making a medium she expected a message. A rather queer spirit prevailed and all felt it. Sat and Mon. she became very badly unbalanced ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p108.jpg) Thats what comes from attempting to go farther than laws controling mortality will permit. Sr Vincent is a woman of high intelligence and of wide educational experience. She has written a book on Alaska that is worthy of considerable merit. Feb 7 Wed Had a pretty good day of tracting and conversing. Sold a Book of Mormon to a colored couple Left them feeling well. Went over on to 15th from 10th and began first tracting. Met a Mrs Clerry, a French Catholic, after talking a few minutes she invited me in and asked some rather pertinent questions. Told me that I ought to be ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p109.jpg) in some profession more worthy of an intelligent person. Then she started in on the crimes laid at the door of Mormonism. After she finished I told her I never followed the policy of attacking any church but that People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones." Then I proceeded to explain some of her objections. Was invited back after being the cause of her spoiling her cooking dinner. Met another lady that was pretty well soured. We had a fine Cottage Meeting at Milligans met a good many sincere country people. Had a new roomer come in and talk for a while on religion. And another day is done. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p110.jpg) Feb. 8. Passed an uneventful day out teaching with Bro Harmon. First went to Sr. Milligan's ate dinner next to Bro Walkers. Couldn't locate Evans so pointed off towards Sipe's. He wasnt home so after talking politics to her infidel sister awhile we took leave of them. Held a very unsuccessful night meeting. People are all interested in Politics. Had quite a talk with a Mr Courtney who is neither a saint nor a sinner, but a socialist. Feb. 9 Met three Elders on their way home from a New Zealand Mission. Elders Sterling, Mesurvy, and Malin. Tracted in the afternoon, Mrs Stockdale invited me in had a ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p111.jpg) good talk with her. Also Mr. Stevens took me in. Feb. 10" Saturday was rather a slow day for tracking. Rain all after noon and evening. Took in the Empress vaudeville. Sun. 11—Regular Sabbath services. In Priesthood meeting, Ellwood & Bro Johnson clashed and Ellwood excommunicated the Branch and all belonging. Johnson talked a little too hard to him Thorogood invited us out to dinner again ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p112.jpg) A Mrs Ransom, a young 19 yr old divorcee is there, in fact she has been coming to church lately. Elders meeting at 5 o'clock as usual, and evening Services at 7:00 Feb 12"— Called on Mrs White before going out tracting. We may take a room there if we think we can reinstall the people. Tracted all afternoon with little avail, people regard religion as a necessary evil, an the one requiring ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p113.jpg) the least of the individuals as members. Hold a good Street meeting, Elder Wheeler holds them pretty well. The Cop run us off the street after the meeting for discussing in a crowd. I think he simply wanted to show his authority. Feb 13—Tues. Was called out to administer to Elder Doodle in the Morning but was late in getting out. He was in considerable pain, was quite relieved when we left. Stormed in the evening so no street meeting. Feb 16" Went to Fremont to visit a few people who are interested. Mrs Thompson had read "Voice of Warning" and she bot at "Cowley" Called on Mrs Fisher, who has read for "Durant" and is quite taken up with it. Had a long talk with her, in the middle of her housecleaning. Left her a Book of Mormon and invited back to spend the afternoon She is a member of the First Christian Church (Campbellite affair), and a very intelligent and learned lady. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p116.jpg) Called on Dolphin, the Peanut butter socialist and Eye medicine man, traded a book off Peanuts at wholesale prices. Had a chat with him. Called on Johnson, the Josephite minister, had a very nice talk with him, he was fair, and not as bitter as we had been led to believe. He had met Dann and Larson atime or two and each had aroused his wrath. Said that Larson had called him a liar and had used some other rather forceful rebukes. Johnson is is sincere and has some ground to contend for. Was invited back. I have found that it pays to agree ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p117.jpg) with thine adversary quickly. One can maintain his ground and be firm with out antagonizing a fellow Feb. 17" Sat. Another unsuccessful day at tracting. Hold a large street meeting however and leave them all feeling fine. Spirit and Knowledge coupled together make a powerful team. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p118.jpg) Feb 19—Mon Had a bum day tracting, no sympathy for a Mormon on 15th Ave. Run into a Presbyterian Minister Atkinson. He rather took me in, didn't let me know who he was for quite a while. Was quite bitter and well posted on the oppositions side. He didn't avail any of the doctrine, just a rehash of the current slanders. He rather made me sore. So I went after him on the beautiful doctrine of Predestination a tenet of the Presbyterian faith, he didn't like it but was wont to keep off from religious platforms. He wanted to get back to the soil and sling a little clay at Jos. Smith & Brigham Young. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p119.jpg) We parted friends, if you get one of them riled and leave him that way, he is very apt to give you a little free, but negative advertizing in his church, making it hard to approach people. Fri. 23—Started in on 16th Sold a Book of Mormon so quick that it frightned me but the monotony of tracting soon restored me. Called on the old coon again but he thinks all men are bad except him. A great memorizer of the bible. Had supper a Haywards and don't let me forget to tell you about the boiled crab that I lied about when I said I liked it. Think I could eat toads alright now or angle worms. They all thot they were a fine dish. We arranged for music etc for the Funeral at 2:00 P.M. Elder Seager took charge of Funeral. It was a very sad and delicate matter to handle. He was a drinker and done no doubt in the heat of passion. Miles Rode.—Count same as above. Include in this riding in any kind of vehicle, namely, street car, train, boat, wagon, etc. Families Visited in Tracting.—Under this heading count any house at which you call and leave a tract with a person. Do not count a family visited where no one is at home and you leave a tract. Where two Elders are tracting together the number of houses visited is to be divided. Families Re-Visited in Tracting.—This is where an Elder has called with a tract and returns to the house and leaves another tract. For example when John Jones has left a tract at a house and he (John Jones) re-visits that house, he calls it a family re-visited. Families of Strangers Visited by Invitation.— Families of Members Visited.— Tracts Distributed.—When two tracts, or a tract and a pamphlet, are left at one house, count the same two tracts distributed. Hours Spent in Actual Missionary Work.—All of an Elder's time while in the mission should be missionary work of some kind. The purpose of this column is, however, to ascertain the amount of time spent with persons who are not members of the Church, in an endeavor to have them accept the Faith. Time spent in tracting, street and branch meetings is to be counted from the time an Elder leaves headquarters until he returns, provided he goes direct to his work or meet- ing and returns direct therefrom. Do not count here the time spent with members of the Church for any purpose. Though you may preach the Gospel to them or administer to the sick among them, the time given to members is not to be counted in this column. Do not count the time spent in trains nor Elder's or branch Priesthood meetings. ----- new page (MSS5883_S1_SS2_I1_B1_F6_p133.jpg) —Elder's Report— Gospel Conversations.—Under this column count conver- sations on the Gospel held with members or strangers of more than ten minutes' duration, nothing less. Hours Spent in Study.—The time spent in class work, Sun- day School, mutual and singing practice, is considered as study. Number of Times Entertained.—Where an Elder eats a meal or sleeps at the home of a stranger or member it is to be counted an entertainment. Where he stays more than one day with one family, each day's hospitalities are to be considered one entertainment. In these cases the end of night ends the day. The following day if you get breakfast only, then leave, the breakfast is counted one; or if you remain all day and night, as stated, count it one entertain- ment only. Refused Entertainment.—In cases where two Elders are traveling together, the Elder only who asks for entertain- ment and is refused counts it. Only when both ask and are refused should each Elder count a refusal. Refused Tracts.— Gospel Letters Written.— Books Sold.— Books Loaned.— Books Given Away.— [the following is written to the right of the above five lines] }Count Strangers and Members. Meetings Held.—This column is given to an Elder for making a record of all meetings he attends. Its total need not be reported. Actual Number of Meetings Held.—The Elder only who presides at a street or cottage meeting, funeral or any other meeting outside of a regular branch meeting, reports the same here. Regular branch meetings. Sunday Schools, Mu- tual meetings, Priesthood meetings or any other meeting held by the branch local authorities are not to be counted. Conference meetings where there is an organized branch are counted as branch meetings. Baptisms of New Members.— Baptisms of Children.— Expenses.—Each Elder is expected to report the total amount of his expenditures for each month, regardless of the purpose for which it is spent. Please paste these rules in your report books and commence immediately to conform your reports to them.
