As I do not purpose my record to be a general one I merely touch the most important subjects of my history. Suffice it then to say it was conceded to be the finist affair than ever was produced here and not excelled in the Union so said the Governor and general Rumor says so. During the time from January until the first day of April of this year I experienced nothing worthy of note. My wives Lucy & Bertha became so possessed of evil as to demand a bill of divorce. After much persuasion & counsel, and the sanction & approval of Pres Young and all who knew the matter I gave them the bill/Copies of which are among my papers dated April 9. My wife Lucy having a child she took it with her but in the month August she brought the child to me to take care of fully, it being quite sick I was very anxious it should live. After much sickness it expired on the 10th day of August. My wife Mary Ann showed great care and real affection for the child and by it increased my attachment for her, for through all this affair from first to last she has shown herself my truest friend. During the Sitting of the Legislature I boarded with Bro Heber C Kimball and I realized much pleasure in the same for we became acquainted I disposed of much goods but the expenses &c swallowed up nearly all that was made. I returned in Januay and attended by invitation the Legislative Ball in the Social Hall. The Presidency attended at the Counting room of Hooper & Williams to refute and allay a most unwarrantable prejudice entertained by them against me and succeeded apparently to their satisfaction but I feel the ever present prejudice. Bro Golightly is the Bakers Bro Palmer the cook. Henefer & Squires the Cook, Barber. We bake bread for the Governor & many others. Our prospects are good for doing a fair business although the times are dull. ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p030.jpg) December/56 During this month. The Legislature convened at Fillmore and adjourned to meet in this City in the Social Hall consequently they came back en masse and with my esteemed and very good friend J I Caine from his Mission to the Sandwich Islands. Our business increased. Capt Hooper Secretary appointed by the Governer, gave a supper to the Legislature, on which occasion the governor in asking a blessing he pronounced such an one as made my very soul rejoice. Business & his favor increased my Joy. On the death of our very esteemed brother, president mayor, Major General, speaker, Universal Man, is his title J M Grant, & consequently my office in his staff ceases. During this year I witnessed the marvellous interposition of God, he blessed me temporally & spiritually, he favored me by funds he blessed me with food, raiment house & home, and above all by his servant Brigham &c forgave me all my sins and by His help I will do better for the time to come. ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p031.jpg) January 1857. Another year has rolled around & on its threshold I stand. I lost my daughter Eliza Jane daughter of Mary Ann. Jan 2, Aged 5 months. She is interred in the Cemetery. I am sorry on her acct. as she grieves because I look upon it as a manifestation of God throughout her bearing, the birth, & short life of the child and its death that God is not pleased with her because she murmurs & complains at some things I see much need of wisdom to guide the affairs of a family. it drives me more to God. February. This month & its incidents must pass as its precedersors unnoted. yes I hope the future ones will be noted fuller. March. This month on the 5th day of it I took the daughter of Abraham B. Wright to wife she is named Hannah Ann Wright. Born Philadelphia May 14, 1840. Thus making me 3 wives. She passed through her endowments and was sealed to me by Prest. B Young I have enjoyed much joy & the spirit of God in preaching in the different wards. I dedicated my house to the Lord, and sat apart 2 rooms for prayer. My wife Mary Ann is still unwell but I hope by faith & prayer she will yet live. I was appointed a Door Keeper in the Tabernacle. ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p032.jpg) April. The business of the Globe increases. Many apostates are leaving and the prospect of a decrease by such means is fair but an increase from faithfulness & marriage is fairer. The conference was without a paralel in the history of the Church and there is an evidence of a disposition to live more devoted to God. J S Williams gave 2 suppers at the rooms to the Nauvoo Balls Bands & friends at a cost of 100$ on the eve of the 13 Just as the Company was about to be seated and came that Caroline had eloped it caused much excitement in town during the whole of the evening, and on the afternoon of the 14 he was arrested & put in the Calaboose. I am pleased to record here a very great improvement in the health of my wife Mary Ann. During several months I have realized many favors from one source and another. I was appointed & have received my commission as 1st Aide Camp to the New Major General G D Grant a great favor and places me were I desire as it seems to put me in connection yet with the deseased Major General J M Grant. We took some boarders and from causes we dismissed them. I have many interesting times of pleasure and association with friends such as Staines W H Kimball, G D Grant, & H B Clawson and those who generally congregate where reason flows and love & good will predominate. Amid all this I experience some trouble from my wife Hannah's jealous disposition. My boy suffers from a rupture ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p033.jpg) and it requires great faith & watching to keep him alive. My wife Mary Ann still unwell. At the regular anniversary of an entrance to these Valleys I went with my 3 wives. Nelson Empy driver & had a time long to be remembered. I give a social supper on Friday Sept 11 to the Maj Gen Staff & my friends. Captain Van Vleit arrived as Quartermaster of U S Army to make provision for the Army bus from every indication none will come and I can date from my own reflection & from the clear manifestation of the Lord's power & the prophecys of Brigham & the servants of God generally all things will be overruled for good. I was by invitation present at an interview between Gov Young and Mr Van Vleit God is preeminently manifest in Brigham's policy How much I love them I hope time & circumstances may prove. I have requested to purchase a city lot of Bro Heber for my family partly to reside on I need more room and garden. By the unhallowed cause pursued by the U S. our express company and excellent stations are abandoned, and 300 of our are placed on the road. We are in a fair way for our independence as a people and from this time we are called Deseret by ourselves. Pres B Young spoke confirming our independence as a people and spoke with the power of the Almighty as also Bro John Taylor truly it was a day of days and the Capt Van V. will have much as to think on & much report. the probability is that the trooops will winter in the territory and on this stipulation that they leave for the East & West. I was reappointed as the committee of arrangements for the Deseret State Fair & appointed to lecture in the 18th Ward on this subject but did not on account of lack of ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p035.jpg) preparation so I attended with Bro G D Grant in the 12th Ward. The readiness and promptness of this people must be pleasing to God. I am ready for the War of Independence I hope to be brave. John Tayler is certainly a host and is surcharged with the matter pertaining to the Kingdom. I feel well in the circle. Visited the 14 Ward and by request spoke on my usual strain the Kingdom first. Some new Gentile clerks arrived to day, as also some Mormon Company. Tuesday Sept 22 spent a very agreeable evening at Bro Judson Stoddard in company with the boys the same as I gave a supper to. Many took dinner at the "Globe" From the preparation made to go out on the road to assist as Aid de Camp to Major Gen G D Grant I laid aside this journal and neglected to keep it up even as imperfectly as it as been done. I was turned by the President to stay at home. ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p042.jpg) During the balance of the month of October & Nov. I should have noted many interesting items. Among the many was a very interesting supper given as the Globe by Bro G A Smith to the Historian office clerks to which by his permission I added 3 of my friends viz H B Clawson, J I Caine, & D O Calder. I was during this seriously unwell. And experienced the kindness of Bro Brigham in sending his carriage to take me home. I have resumed my old place as door keeper at the Tabernacle. Pres Young took a Tripe dinner at the Globe with his sons & friends. I continue to keep unwell. Our Cook Sister Jemmett improves on acquaintance in her line. For the past week ending Nov 28 we have had Snow, sleet, fogs, & general cloudy weather. I occasionally preach in some of the Ward Meetings on Sunday evenings. At the 7 I feel particularly free & in fact generally to God I give the praise. Sunday Nov 29. I heard Gov Cummings of Utah (so said) his proclamation a dish of unsalted mush would have more strength in it than in his official document. H B Clawson read his Yankee story in good style and some happy hits at the Troops on Harris Fork. Brigham daily shows himself more & more a man. I preached in company ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p043.jpg) with Bro Clements in the 19 ward School house and enjoyed liberty, during the balance of this year. I officiated at several dinners. The Theatre opened and I was appointed by the Pres. which is Bro Brigham as Stage Manager. we opened with the Lady of Lyons &c. enjoyed good time, large audiences, and good pay. all through the year God has blessed me and sustained me and I thank him & hope I may improve for the year to come I signally notice one great fact in my connection with the church from the day I left home God has sustained me and blessed me beyond hope or expectation for I lack much I sometimes fear the requisite qualifications to His favor yet God prospers me and I live. I marvel sometimes why it is that God prospers me in some things & not in others now in the Celestial Order of more wives & I fondly hoped more children yet I have had wives & they have left. I have children and though fair and healthy & lovely to behold they die till I have no boy. Now the Query, Bro Hyrum Smith blessed me and said I was of Sin and by birth &c had a night to the priesthood. has my being a Sinto any thing to do with my apparent ill luck in the plurality. I do not murmur at the dispensations of God. I know all is right. I only query. ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p044.jpg) January 1858 The Theatre still open and the Legislature sitting. During this month a mass was called to sanction the establishing a Bank a Cuneney association fully endorsed & papers circulated to obtain signatures of all who would sustain it & take the paper as gold. I signed. I also signed 30.00 to commence with towards supporting the Standing Army. I also gave 4 Bushels of Wheat and some flour towards the Fast day offerings, and one way & another I have tried to be up in all the requirements of me. I labored very hard during the Theatre season and at its close on the 30th I was pleased with the testimony of my friends appreciating my services. I suffered twice this month severe attacks of Bilious Headaches. ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p045.jpg) x February. I have placed my family in order and they are all dine at one table. I gave a party to a few select friends on the 9 and on the 10 I allowed my daughter Sarah Emily to give one to her young friends both passed off very satisfactorily. The Globe Business continues very dull with us, people are all engaged some way or other in preparations for the War. The young men going out are recieving their endowments. The new currency Bills promise to be a very fine specimen of workmanship it will take till September to get them out, in the meantime to meet the exigency of the times they with print some redeemable with the new ones. Bro H B Clawson has commenced a drop of a new Theatre success of inspiration attend him & all who aid & abet the enterprise. he gives his evidence of great ability having to his share a large amount of good taste. the weather continues fine, but a little colder at nights. The Deseret State Currency association issue their paper this present month & the better to effectually do this I believe all the gold & silver should be deposited in the bank for paper. I attended a very fine meeting at the 70 Hall, which is being beautifully painted in fresco, the singing was delightful. ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p046.jpg) I am suffering in common with 100s from a severe epidemic and its lingering & debilitating powers makes it tedious to keep ground. The business at the Globe a little improved. In the present difficulty between us as a people and limited states I am of the opinion all will be arranged without any contest whatever though the troops may retain their present post yet I believe ultimately they will have & goods gold &c will be vastly increased here but then look out for Apostacy. this is but a idea. Endowments are still being given to those who are going in the Standing Army. On Sunday Evg 14. I attended 15 Ward Meeting in company with Gilbert Clements enjoyed a good time & much liberty in speaking. Sunday Evening 22 I attended meeting at the 7 Ward were as usual I was well recieved and enjoyed much liberty. Bro G Clements accompanied me. I attended all a meeting of the Typographical & Press association heard some good Essays & Singing my name was entered on the programme for Friday Feb 26, but I shall decline attending as I fear it may be denouned as a polysophical resuscitation contrary to wishes of those I value more than gold. I shall wait for its resurrection to the same power that caused its suspension. I was invited to become Treasurer to the same but this & to write an Essays all which I decline. The weather remarkably fine. ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p047.jpg) 25th This day an esteemed & valued friend Col Kane of Winter Quarters & Historical Lecture Notoriety came to town direct from Washington on some affairs the matter was laid before the Presidency & Council at 7 this evening. he has performed the trip in 43 days some what unwell & has left his family so to perform this trip. Bro Amasa Lyman accompanied him. he experienced some abuse and detention from apostates but was finally released from them by the interference of some of the brethren. I venture the opinion it is a mission at the the instance of President Buchanan & his Cabinet. I sent some fish to him to day, & was pleased to hear he is improved. He has assumed the name of Dr Osborne, & preserves his incognito well. I withdrew from any connection with the Typographical & Press association because it was assuming a Polysophical tendency which I feel myself bound not to sustain till the first presidency shall choose to revive it. I received a very insulting & contemptible note by order of the President of said Society Phineas H Young written by John G Chambers clerk I have assigned it a place in my papers also the one I sent to them. I am having my house & garden repaired. I had a serious conversation with my wife Hannah & her parents for some time on Thursday evening at 7½ she promises amendment and I hope she will. Mary Ann continues yet very sick. I fear the approach of death is too evident to hope her stay will be long. ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p048.jpg) March. The weather continues very fine indeed. I dispatched a letter to the San Francisco Chronicle offering to become a correspondent during the times expected. Andrew Cunningham, 10th Men are called out to day to take charge of Echo Kanyon works as Ben Symonds and his band of Indians have taken possession of them and report says to help the Soldiers pass. I am of the opinion that the Indians that have mixed & mingled with the Whites will never be of any account, for I am slow to believe them anybody at all either in the beginning or end. 10th To day preparations are being made to send out the herd of cattle 200 in number belonging to Gilbert & Gewish, and 15000 lbs flour. 10th Bro Staines had an interview the Presidency on the subject of the business at the Globe by examination it was found not to pay and by their rote it was closed, which has kept me very busy closing up the concern. The Bakery is carried on by Bro Golightly an abstract of business will appear. Pres Young came down to the Globe and accepted an inventory of Stock and decided to give Bro W C Staines $1000 for his time and to me the balance making my portion nearly 2000$ I felt and do now extremely obliged to him I gave Staines debts off the balance sheet to make his portion so each collect their own. At the Globe I removed my family over to the old homestead on the 23 inst. Anne & Hannah living in the house in the lot and Kate with Mary Ann. I had a difficulty with a Mr Mc Neile who came into the Globe drunk and made too much noise. I gave him into charge of the Police which resulted in a fine of 50$ & 3 Months imprisonment the latter part Gov Cumming remitted. Came in and with this month the commencement of a gentile paper called Valley Fair edited by Kirk Anderson, a rabid and bitter Mormon eater. no notice was taken of it by the Deseret News which has caused a large amount of anger which finds vent weekly in this sheet. The Editor of the V. J. threatens to make the Mormons howl, and recognize his presence. Dr Covey of the Army is excessively annoyed at some Watchings on his cause in the 8 ward were he has been seen in too close proximity to certain Mormon girls one named Jackson. Dr C. threatened to maul Bishop sheets within an inch of his life for daring to caution the girls against his arts. I heard Capt P J. Dr C. and Morrell our P. Quartermaster threatened if we dance any of us to crook our finger he <& the army> would deal with us in the most summary manner, and he would be God damned but blood ought to be shed in those streets and old Buchannan would find the Army was not such fools to pardon a damned set of polygamists for we were a stink in his nose, and he hoped yet to see old Brigham hury. The Gentile paper Valley Fair was expelled as libelous, scurrilous &c from both houses the Editor was present. I was much pleased with the privilege of having them altogether once a year. A sleigh ride included. About 6 of the same day I spent the evening with the office boys & their wives At Bro Muper's Union Hotel, I took 3 of my wives Anne, Hannah, Kate, enjoyed ourselves supremely. On the evening of the 31st I discharged Andrew Cowan my old faithful Waiter purely from cause of no business which I regret from many reasons. I have concluded to stay altogether at the Globe and moved up my wife Kate to help Mrs Jemmett. This is my prospect in business yet I have no right to complain am more than satisfied that God has blessed me and my brethren have been brothers indeed. Pres B Young and the presidency generally have me great favors for which I here record my sincere thanks praying that they may see the end of their enemies. I fervently pray for a forgiveness of the years follies & sins and hoping my fortieth year I may improve in every respect. I pray God to preserve my family healthy strong, vigorous & faithful another year. ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p064.jpg) January. Another year has commenced to 1859 unroll from the great future, how much of misery, hopes & fears for all is to be evolved who shall say and to me and my household in particular. A preparation for 2 days a head in Mormondom is impossible how much more for a year I can only live day by day and do the duties of each succeeding day. On the 18th my daughter Sarah Emily numbered 13 years. My two boys are sick with some disease like scropiter which has been prevalent among cattle sheep in particular, Hanry needed the assistance of Dr France which soon gave relief. On the 21. I took Rate to a large yet select party at Bro Feramory Little we enjoyed ourselves supremely. Bro Winder kindly took us out and brought home about 3/2. Nothing of further moment occurred worthy of note in my Journal. February. I gave a supper to the office boys, and read to them a farce written on the failure to discover gold by a lot of gentiles at the point of the Mountain which was very much approved of. On the 14th day I concluded to close the "Globe" which met the entire approval of Pres Young as also my course during my occupancy. I moved home. Made arrangements with Bro Jost to go to San Pete after my cattle & take them and commence a farm for me at ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p065.jpg) Ogden which he will proceed to do. Kate went up with him on a visit. Snow storms are prevalent and heavy ones at that. I gave the boys another treat at the Globe previous to closing. <*> On the 23rd at 11 oclock AM I witnessed the death of my first wife Mary Ann which to me was the severest stroke a merciful God has inflicted on me I had just laid hands on her and felt to commend her to God. She departed without a sigh a murmur yet previously she had suffered much. I grieve the loss of a Wife which expresses all I can say for she was a wife in every sense of the Word. She was the daughter of Noah and Ann Barton Born in the Township of shamokin, Shamokin County state of Pennsylvania Feb. 6, 1814, thus making her 45 years of age. What she was not, Woman can never be. I have arranged to b[-]y her on Friday at 2 PM, and have requested friends to attend, see Deseret News Feb 23, /59. As day succeeds day so increases my sorrow and as I view the many specimens of her handiwork, her prudent foresight and economy for the future I still feel my lonesomeness. the sincere condolence of many friends I feel but none knew her worth like me. Her Sister whom we term Aunt Betsy will still live with us which is a comfort to me and will be a good to the children as she can instil into them their Mother's ways ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p066.jpg) Bro H C Kimball attended and officiated & spoke truthfully of Mary Ann's witness, such as patience, fortitude and economy, paying a very high tribute to her memory. a great many friends attended at the house and 9 well filled carriages followed to the grave. She was dressed in full Endowment order. I was much gratified with the marks of respect shown. Anne my next wife will come and live in the house with me. while Hannah still will live at the other house alone. We have had for some days past the heaviest storms of snow than I have ever experiences in the Valley especially at this season of the year. during this month I busied myself preparing plans for a large hotel under Gentile Auspices but I have no faith in the enterprise as all things seem to tend to uncertainty as far as they are concerned. Despite my feelings I attended a Wedding Supper & dance on the occasion of the marriage of Bro David Mackenzie & Miss Crowther at Wilkins Hall I took my wife Hannah. I do not know as there is any time fixed how long a man should mourn so I went and all things considered enjoyed myself well. ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p067.jpg) . March. I am still unemployed, the hotel enterprise has failed. Troops have been quartered at Provo at the instance of Judge Cradlebaugh to protect and guard Court and prisoners. Judge Gov Cummings has ordered them away. I received an invitation from the typographical Society of a very personal insult received from its president Phineas H Young (see my letters) I have spoken two or three times in the 70s hall of late. the last time I enjoyed much of the Spirit. I find much annoyance and vexation of spirit as well as the schooling of the feelings in polygamy my wives Anne & Hannah are much dissatisfied one with another and hence Jealousy, bickering and strife is the result. I hope years, experience, and the absurd Jolly rich be made apparent. Note. My wife Kate returned from Ogden Feb. 20. I waited upon the inhabitants of the 14, 15, 16, 17 & 19 Wards to obtain their Signatures to a petition to His Excellency Governor Humming to ask him to remove the troops from Provo and otherwise protect us in our rights. a great number of names was obtained. On the 31 I attended the funeral of Ms E D Woolley a great crowd was there. I officiated for the friends at the grave. I was farmed by a carriage from Mr Schell Agent of the Western Mail Company. ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p068.jpg) April. Gov Cumming issued a proclamation against the course pursued by Hon. John Cradlebaugh which was recieved by him contemptuously. I was quite unwell for the first two m[---] days of this month. I gave a card party to a few of my male friends. Conference was of no material importance so far as doctrine or business was concerned Pres B Young gladdened our hearts by his appearance and speaking on the stand causing quite a sensation. On the 10th I spoke to the people in the morning at 11 oclock. Subject. Matthew. 9. 17 verse. I enjoyed unusual liberty I thank God for the gift of his spirit. I also spoke on the subject of a present living miracle, at the 13th Ward school House. I got up a very superior Record Book at a considerable cost but I believe it surpasses any yet made in every respect. Snows are yet frequent much suffering prevails among the poor in consequence of the length and serenity of the winter during this month I was engaged at Lord Hosman &c, Wholesale Dry Goods Store. ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p069.jpg) May. Still at the Store, but the place does not suit me I hear so much profanity & see so much drinking that I am ill at ease. during this month the store closed. I also had some kind of a fit caused by a too great flow of blood to the head. <+ +> I continued out of business until July 24 when I deemed it probably profitable to open the "Globe" again which I did at a monthly rent 75$ per month. I done a very good business until the 14 day of November when from several combined causes I deemed it necessary to close business I had made enough to live on through the winter and inasmuch as I was a member of the Legislature from G S L County I would have enough to do anyhow. During the year 1859 now closed I have enjoyed much of the favor of my God and consequently much of the favor of my brethren. I have been marvellously preserved from the evils that are in the midst of the people when I consider the influences that has surrounded me and the offers of advancement from the outsiders. My gratitude is great to my Father that I have been preserved and my family also, for some events that have transpired with me during the last few months see next page. ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p070.jpg) Events of note that happened in my history during the year 1859. The year opens and wise-acres have said it will be a very eventful one and I am inclined to the opinion. The great future who shall unfold. I continued in the Legislature during its session of 40 days and recieved my pay and through the dancing season attended several balls February. On the 1st day of this month it was determined by Pres Young to give a Ball and Supper to Gov Cumming, Genl. Stambaugh, & his Corp, Dr Bernishel, and a Captain Gibson, to come off on the 7 of the month which it did in great splendor for this country. I was chosen as one of the Committee of the same. On the 9th also I attended another one in the same Hall (Social Hall) equally as fine. I gave my services free to the first though occupying me about 13 days, because I remembered Pres Young's kindnesses to me. There is some talk of my travelling this season. I am yet out of any kind of business but very thankful for the health my family enjoys. The winter continues very severe. Great efforts are being made by Pres B Young to foster free educational projects. Free Public Lectures ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p072.jpg) are also all the vogue. Great and I trust successful efforts are being made to develope the intellect and also the mineral resources of the Country. Much machinery is promised to be introduced this season among the variety is a Paper Mill which is much needed here. I still continue my Sunday evening labors among the Wards and I am much blessed thereby and the people testify they are benefited also. In consequence of my poor circumstances I am compelled to withdraw my children from school. my health for the last few days is poor indeed. Much expectation is alive relative to movements anticipated at the ensuing April Conference. A doubt hangs about my going on a mission. I am appointed to speak to night at the 70s Council Hall I feel much my dependence on the Lord for His Holy Spirit to help me. the importance of the Apostleship is the subject running through my mind. I know not however whether the Spirit will so dictate. The end of another month. ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p073.jpg) March. During this month I was extremely sick Bro Israel Ivins was my nurse and doctor. Pres B Young informed us the day was not far distant say 10 years before we should some move to the East. Orders arrived this month for the removal of the U S Troops towards Mexico. I continue to speake in some Ward meeting every Sunday night and enjoy much of the Spirit. I do not enjoy good health and I regret to say lack of business and peace in my family tends much to discompose me. This month great exertions are being made to discover coal by the aid of a pan of peep stones discovered by the means of a dream its possessor and friends are sanguine of success which I am sure I hope may crown their efforts. The Probate Courts are investigating these crimes of Horse Stealing &c and several commitments are being made, it walks into the ranks of some people. Elders E J Benson is appointed to preside in Cache Valley Orson Hyde at San Pete. I have made several efforts to get into business but I fail, what I shall do I know not my way seems dark and unpromising. This month witnessed also the sickness of Bro D H Wells and H C Kimball. Conference approaches and much is expected. I have done my gardening & my folks their house cleaning and so ends another month. ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p074.jpg) April. on the 6th we had an unusually interesting conference and more than ordinary impressive. A few missionaries were called. Directly after the close of the conference I commenced making the necessary to re-open the Globe agreeable to the suggestion of Pres Young when he favored me with an invitation to dinner, which I gladly accepted. We spent several days in cleaning and arranging the house. During the entire month business very dull, not near enough to cover expenses how it will yet prove looks to me however no brighter than the past. May. Like its predecessor very dull an occasional spirt of trade. I see my only chance is to close and for ever quit the trade. I have consulted with the president and he suggests if it will not bear expenses why close at once. I shall linger for 2 Months from the time of opening and then see June. On the 1st day of this month Surveyor General Stambaugh as a committee of one waited on me to order a Champagne Supper for about 12, or 15 persons, which came off the same evening, amounting to 78, 75 I had ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p075.jpg) much difficulty in getting my pay and when I asked for it I was only insulted and finally threatened to be caned when I seized him by the throat wrenched the cane from his hand by my right hand and aimed a blow at his head. this occurred in Hockaday and Burr store. I moved home and am endeavoring to settle my affairs and I now intend nothing intervening to remove all hands to Beaver City Beaver County, and obtain by the blessing of God and the exertion of myself and family a tolerable sure way to live. My wife, Hannah through sheer folly made a mis carriage. Minnie is very low, cutting her teeth the cause. Lucy Jones since she left me Lucy Holbrook died I truly grieved for she was a good girl but erred through the evil jealousy of others. I have had some sickness in the family and in my own person causing me much anxiety but through the blessing of God we are yet spared. I have removed Hannah to another house her conduct becomes more and more unbearable and puts me to much trouble, her tongue, Jealousy and her Mother prompts to evil and must I fear some day end in a separation which I dislike to contemplate. God have mercy on me and forgive me and all my folks for the follies and sins of the past and help me to live faithful and be useful in the future in the kingdom of our God. With him I visited Bishop Seeley kindly recieved, asked him for a trail of land on Town Creek he referred me to Bro A Hyde to whom he had given the land. I waited on Bro Hyde, told him of Pres B Young consent to my locating at Mount Pleasant in Spring-Town and my choice of the first and my desire to possess his claim in all of which he acquiesed. I gave him a Cow and calf for the same. I purchased a double log house for a saddle and bridle had it moved to some springs on the claims half a mile from the town, when it was deemed inexpedient for me to locate then as it created an uneasy feeling and a desire to locate out amongst many agreeable to Bro Hyde and the Bishop counsel I moved my house on the South side of the Greeks erected it and was proceeding to ----- new page (MSS1627_I1_B1_F1_p081.jpg) complete the same when another cause of detention arose.
