There was a large table and a glass pitcherful of clear water and a box. There was two clear stones in the box of a square shape. Our Savior took the two stones from the box and gave one to Bro Jarvis and one to the other man. Both men said "I wanted like to see my Willi Our Savior called "Willie, come forth." March 14 1884 I was born in the year 1830 in St George middlesesc London When I was three months old our house was burned and we were destitute so I have been informed. my fathers Chest of tools cost more than a Hundred pounds. My father had been saving money that summer but he was discouraged and he became addicted to drink, but he was an honest man and never indulged until he had paid his Bills that were . When he died he did not owe any one. My Earliest recolections date back to 1830 <5>.The place was called Stepny London Eng it was a pretty place. in summer the grass was as high as I were, plenty green fields. and Butter cups and daisies in fact it was like a flower garden for many of the neigbors cultivated flowers for a livelihood we lived near the Church one remarkable grave stone was built in the end of the Church with with a ring in its mouth in the act of swallowing it. There is quite a romance connescion with it I have been to theaters where they played the piece called the fish and the ring. I like many others thougt my childhoods home the dearest spot on earth, My father was afflicted with Asthma. I have often of a satterday night gone and said Please Father dear Father come home he would come home with me, as I was his youngest child. my Sister Margaret was seven years older. my youngest Brother y was ten years older than [---]me I was out walking with my father when he commenced coughing and burst a blood vessel, he lived a few months but before I was Eight years old I was fatherlys, we kept his lady ten days before consigning to Mother earth ; that was my first great sorrow. My Mother had to work very hard to keep us and pay my schooling she was a noble woman. when she was sick through over working she would plead with the Lord to spare her life to raise me. she had to go to an hospital and I had to be deprived of a fond mother. My Bro Samuel paid my board for his kindness to the fatherless I hope he will get his reward when I was eleven years old I would plead with my Mother to let me leave school and earn my living. when I kept teasing her she consented and I was ----- new page (MSSSC2049_p010.jpg) 1884 Proved & pleased when I brought my wages to her. Sent in a few months she apprenticed me to the dressmaking and I had to work with out pay after wards <2 years> I would get pay I continuig to work at my needle. worked seven months after I was married. I lived on board of ships. a great part of the time until I had three Chuldren. When my Eldest daughter was born which was in the year 1848 my husband heard the gospel and told me the glad tidings we were both baptized on Christmas night in the river Thames by Elder Bradshaw. Thomas Fisher was the man that preached the gospel to my husband. he is living at Session Settlement at the present dollar a day was offered him in Ashland we went their thirty five miles from the city of Boston after going there that situation had to be giving up there was only one family there. of saints the village. was a pretty one and I was better in health. When some of the people was so sorry for me and thought my husband ought to be ashamed of him self to bring me from my native country and would take me to Utah I told them I did not want their pity for if my husband did not take me I should go I did not have any policy but was blunt and I did not get any more of their pity my husband left them and went to try and get work in the city again. George earned one dollar per week we had to take that in potatoes or beans or in what they raised and that is all we had that winter the Coldest I ever saw. we suffered we only had frozen potatoes to eat but we never published it we never let any one know what we passed through. some of my Children knows what I am writing is true I and the family with the ecception of George came up to East Boston my husband went hungry himself himself. at last he got a few weeks work. My seventh child was born I felt very bad in leaving George, it was the first time in my life that I had parted from him the distance was not great I felt great sorrow as he was such a comfort to me. I dreamed one night I had a ----- new page (MSSSC2049_p013.jpg) Lord if I had to leave my Children without a Mother I plead with him to let me live to raise my family. Telegraphm that I had to bury one of my Children I thought it was george I awoke and was troubled in my mine about him. and dreamed I saw him in a long brown coat looking sick I took pleasure when I woke in knowing he had not got a brown coat in a very short time my baby girl was sick with Cholera infantim as soon as she was taking sick I felt she would die I had no faith when the brethern adminstered to her I said I felt she would die when a few days latter George Came home sick. as soon as he was a little better they sent him home I told him of my dream he said after they had given a vapour bath they put his masters coat on him to keep him warm. The President of the branch Brought George Q Cannon to administer to me as my health was so poor Br Cannon advised us to try and get to Florence or Winters quarters he said I should not live if I stayed there. We sold our feather bed 60 pound new feathers stove and anything we could and brought three hundred pounds luggage and bid fare well to the grave of my girl and started for florence. that was quite a journey perhaps in the dead of the night we would to change cars wake up the little ones and drag them along we arrived at Winters quarters safe and sound Father was impatient to gather if he had to come in a hand cart he worked at makeing wagons covers tents and earned enough provisions for the journey across the plains. Br Cannon had one wagon in the Company we thought we would not be sorry to hav it the large shed where we stoped and lived in let the rain in our bed was all a float when it rained. We came by the side of Br Cannon Wagon the man by the name of Flunt had Charge of it he had a large family he would not allow his children to walk; not enough for excercise they would cry to walk. ours would have to walk. the only ride my husband had was in one of B Morves wagon for ten minutes. he had to carry the children <[-]nd> I had to carry the Children. My husband had to stand guard more than his turn as there was some that would not take their turn he would put up the tent and often cook. I would say those that eat must cook I would be so used up. some of the Company would scold this brother for not walking more and let me ride. But he soon left the Church. I think my trials will compare with the women of the Book of Mormon history my Son Fleker was born a few weeks after I was in the valley. I was delighted with the valley and was pleased to be able to see the Prophet of God we were blest with plenty of food Father worked for Brigham he paid his hands good Beef & flour my husband worked in the paper mill by day and cultivated a farm by night he raised a good crop one son worked in the Pottery one little fellow in the nail factory ----- new page (MSSSC2049_p014.jpg) We took two familes of emigrants in from the plains – one family we kept two weeks and helped them after they moves away. The other family, we kept four months they had ten head of stock and ate a great deal of my husband's feed. At the October Conference, 1861. Brigham Young called for volunteers to Dixie- my husband was one of the volunteers, but he had no team. I felt grieved knowing what we suffered on the plains. I thought as we had gathered to Head quarters, where we had the great privelege of listening to a prophet's voice- it seemed to me that I would be willing to go through privations again to live in the city; but to go away and leave the city, which for years I had wished to come to seemed too bad. When Brigham understood the[-] my husband to come he asked father if he would as soon stay and help get the roof on the theater my husband being impulsive told him he would rather go at the first. he was to get some one to bring us nine in family. one of the Brethren in sugar house ward had an old wagon that was old in Navuoo and when Brigham asked him why he did not come with the pioneers he said his wagon was to old. Brigham told him to come along he said the wagon will not break down. the man said although many had his came to the valley. I advised my husband to my that wagon he did so and a yoke of cattle and for Dixie Land we started we had to walk and would go ahead. My self and children would take rocks and of the road I thought a span of pigs they would follow m like dogs. Come at my call my boy said to the man we were traveling with I will be your second wife if you will give me a ride. Our wagon broke down at Filmore Paul Smith had us all to dinner I felt grateful made her a present of some bowls I had some dear friend on the road Br King at filmore and others I never made myself known to any Br Paul Smith was the only [---] we eat in anyone house my husband went back throug[-] and helped Br. Heyward through the grapevine sand, his friends did not help him my husband was not aquainted with him. when we camped at noon he said we should be blest in fact Br favors your are blessed already in having such a nice family. ----- new page (MSSSC2049_p015.jpg) my husband was always on hand to do good and oblige but the cattle did not like it the peopel that George 23 years ago knows what the sand was our wagon was the 21 wagon we were the first on our City lot after the City was surveyed my husband thought that laban would command food when we were in the old camp we eat up our provisions and the diner on Christmas day was brave but we enjoyed good health for I thanked the Lord we had a family of children of seven four hungry greying boys and three growing girls and often the tears would run down their cheeks when they were hungry. they would not ask they knew I had only bran I would get some of that for molases I would got sister Thomson to take a plate and bought a peice of liver when an ox was killed. I had never bartered for any thing and I would feel ashamed to day to go to a store with Eggs or butter if it was not for my bashfulness in that particular I might have sometimes have a notion that would have benefited my family. The first meal I had on this City lot was some flax seed I had brought for seed I have always been dainty but the flax seed was pretty good the trouble was we ate it all. we have been frequently with out flour for three months at the time I have known my husband to go to the farm two days without any kind of food I have seen him so pleased thinking he had hundred bushels of corn the stock would get in and he would not get his seed again we planted barley on the City Lot we were thankful for it I loaned some of that and we had to go short again. my husband chest was so weak that when he ate he was so weak that he would take a Chill always in the water makeing ditches repaving dams he had the Chills for three years, sometimes two a day as soon as the fever left him he would commence again and after all the work he has done he has in property the spring which Cost him 50 dollars in money beside fencing it the fence was stole the animals ate the Crop. We have two horses one cow and the City lot he gave to me I have three Chuldren born in St George my sons helped to build the Tabernacle one plastered on Carried the hod I would look and see him at the top. my husband worked on the Temple three years and was among the first to get the greatest blessings the Lord has to bestay on us ----- new page (MSSSC2049_p016.jpg) my son and daughter went to arizona with the blessing of the servants of God but oh that trial. I thought that would kill me it helped to destroy my health ater that trial my fairey boy my youngest darling child was snatched away our hope. He was going to martha Snow school kept in the tabernacle killed by lightning on the top of [---] steps. I tried to be cheerful and tried to comfort my family. I knew it was wrong to be selfish even in grief and [---]. I kissed the [---] and thought the Lord wanted to chasten me yet I knew the Lord did comfort me and ruled it for my good. I had a dream before he died that I lost him in a crowd and I knew I could never find him two little boy came to me and tried to comfort me. I told them they were dear Boys but that they were not my Willie. He was very kind to me two nights before he was killed he jumped up out of bed when I was groaning with the pain of my chest he laid his hands on me and prayed in the name of Jesus. He wanted his sister to keep the word of wisdom she promised him he was an active quick inteligent child B Snow gave me great comfort when he returned from the city he shake about the accident in his fatherly manner. B Snow advised my husband to take a trip to Arizona which he did. I felt I could not go without my next youngest Billy went with us his brother was glad to have him stay with him his father thought there was a better influence there than at the reef where he had been working so I had to part with him. this fall he came in to be married stayed all the winter and hurting again. I have only only home now and I can not expect to keep her many years as she is eighteen and there will be more hurting but I must not anticipate to [---] and I feel certain if I had always kept the ward of wisdom as I did in England for a few years I should have had more wisdom given me to teach my children. When [---] marriage was told me by a teacher before it was taught in public. I went in a private room and prayed. I might have power given me that I might not speak against that principle. I knew by the spirit of God that it was true. when sisters in england felt bad and left the church I have tried to comfort them I have defended the principle in my [---] way when gentlemen has asked me about it. I told them is. ----- new page (MSSSC2049_p017.jpg) for that answer to prayer I am thankful. I have never doubted the principle but have always been afraid of my own weakness and selfishness but my Children knew I have taught them to do right in it and do as they would like to be done unto. in England when I found the school master was speaking against the mormons I took my boy away at once. I would my children be uneducated like myself than learn all that could be taught them in the world and be ignorant of the principles of teh gospel. I am thankful I have never had a teachers trial since I have been in the Church which 36 years and hope to prove faithful until the end and I would exhort my Children always honor the priesthood — and be assured the angels that attend us is nigh unto us and there is a power about us that will cause our prayers to be answered. and we shall be chastened in my Patriarchal blessing it says that I should lay hands on my sick children in the name of Jesus. I have never employed a doctor only twice in my life for my Children once in England but I never let my Child tast the medicine. I threw it away by prayer and fasting and keeping the word of wisdom when she was anacted by the servants of the Lord she was raised up again my daughter has said if faith and the ordinance will save Willie mother will not lose home, but he went and if it will ensure his salvation and as B Snow said the boys are in a higher school then I can say I am glad he is gone. I realize all that I have any claim to is in the grave yard. I cannot say he was mine we do not own anything on this earth only as our father will besto[-] blessng upon us and yet we are selfish and think this is mine. I am thankful all my Children is in the Church two of them has offered to keep the higher law but has not been able to yet two has lived it for years I hope they all will and do right in it with the fear of God before their eyes leave all being boys and be men of sterling worth they will find the way of the trangressor is hard but to know you are doing right makes a heaven on the earth in its present state. we can live so we will have the whisperings of the good sp[-]it all the time I know that every trial and affliction will tend to pri[---] us I have my diaphragm [---] and Bronchitis and the Asthma the Kidney very bad. and the body is getting diseased and I feel very useless and I know this body must die but I am thankful for the teaching of this church has takeing the fear of death away I used to be so frightened by the ranters ----- new page (MSSSC2049_p018.jpg) If this church was in error like the others Churches and had no authority. then I should be glad I had joined it for the peace it has given me in this life but there would be no power to bless if the Church was owned and directed by God himself. I am thankful my spirit was sent to this earth the year the Church was organised in my Childhood days I would be delighted to read about the angel opening the prison gates for the apostol of the lord and I would say Oh I wished I had lived in that day. When my husband told me that the angel had come and there was apostols in the Church it charmed me I believed it. Did we have all ways the good spirit no I felt after that to opose it I had opposition on every side but the good spirit would wake me up in the night and whisper if to day thou wilt hear my voice harden not your heart. I did not go to hear them preach before I was baptized I read my testament again my husband believed and I was certain of the truth of it I shall never forget the feeling I had the first time I went to meeting to be confirmed a member. they sung Come all the Sons of Zion and let us praise the Lord I have never heard it sung with out thinking of the feeling I had when I first heard it. the blest me with dreams by night and I think I have been ungrateful Child to be so blest and yet so often to forget Father I have always attended my sunday meetings with few exceptions I have often gone to meeting and partook of the sacrement carelessly and stumbled many times but I do believe up the present time I do believe my sins are forgiven and I feel to forgive every one and have no unkind feelings to any in the world at the present time March the 14 1884 I go sometimes to the Temple to help to clean it I have been for my dead relatives but I have been for a few not knowing many and at present no way of finding out my ancestors record. In 1882 by the Counsel of Br Erastus Snow we went to Snowflake. saw the grand falls on the Colorado went to Nutrioso on the road our wagon backe down. stayed at Odervile 8 days makeing it about a thousand miles we had traveled makeing about seven thousand miles I have traveled altogether ----- new page (MSSSC2049_p019.jpg) I remember one incident on the plains my son Brigham was very sick and feverish although weary and tiered myself I wanted to carry him but he would not allow me to I went to the captain of the and asked him to alow my son to have the horse to ride that was used for driving the loose stock he said our wagon had the least freight in he should ride in that but he let me take it he rode it and I drove the loose stock joyfully but he only had that hindlodge for a half hour before the Boy that was related to the captain and rode the horse came swearing and mad him get of we made no complaint I believe we had the sympathy of many of the company the wagons were all heavily loaded and many taht owned wagons walked a great deal. another incident occurs to my mind my son Samuel five years old fell under the whell of the wagon the wheel passing over his leg he was very slhig slightly hurt each of my children caused their small sack made out of our brussel Carpet his had a metal powder flask on it it wasa all twisted up like it had been rung this flask saved the leg from being mashed I feel to thank the Lord for that and acknowledg his hand in saving the boy from being a cripple the little fellow walked the day, giving as before I feel thankful although we traveled so many thousands with a little family of [---] all young yet they were preserved by sea and by land. Our ship caught fire and the steamboat was on fire One man was burned on the ship pretty back was buried in the sea. One or two more was buried at sea on That voyage. We saw the Niagara falls I would like to see them again it is a grand sight I have seen the black falls on out trip to Arizona but they are not to be compared to the niaguia falls. I had a powerful testimony about the word of wisdom in the meeting at poplar branch at a testimony meeting A sister Cole spoke in tounges in the early part of the meeting. I saw a Brother came in the latter part of the meeting and he gave the interpretation to the handmaidens of this branch as many are keeping the word of wisdom which I have caused to be published through the length and breadth of the earth by my servants I will light and knowledge and hidden wisdom and enumerated many blessings but to those that will not hearken unto the words of my servants That I have caused to be published by my servants through the length & breadth of the land, when they ask for light I will give darknes and he said thus saith the Lord this is the interpretation of the tounge of the handmaiden of the Lord. We can only get blessings by obedience to the wishes of the Almighty and his wishes are for our good.. ----- new page (MSSSC2049_p020.jpg) The saints pass through various scenes. I remember the first year I was in the valley we had a poor shanty that would not keep out the rain I would put extra clothing on the bed but when I would get into bed with my baby I would get my feet in water. One night I got up out of bed and put a quilt down by the fire to get warm after sleeping some time I do not know how long as I had no clock my Son George tried to wake me up he said I was on fire but the smell had lulled me to sleep and I would not stir he put the fire out of the clothes. next morning I was astonished to see how much of my quilt was burnt I feel to acknowledge the hand of the Lord in that as well as in many other events of my life I in my girlhood days was a very heavy sleeper my Mother would awake at the slightest noise but one night I could hear my mother coughing in my sleep I could not wake her. I rose and saw the sparks flying in the next room I got her awake at last and we had the fire out the carpet was burnt and several of the boards One evening I was going to the tuesday night testimony meeting just before I went I smelled fire I went upstairs and searched every room in the house at last I found it in a cupboard under the stairs, if I had not found it out I should have five children burnt to death as they slept up stairs no one in the house but them. And the stairs would have been burnt first I often think the angels of their presence has taken better care of them than I have, I tremble when I think of me leaving them alone. I do think althou the Lord sent them to me to take care of them I think he took charge of them . I could not leave a child in the house now but sometimes I was compeled to leave them alone when I lived in England. I often think what a blessing sleep is to the weary soul. When trouble bows us down and we sleep we forget for the time being our sorrows and our bodies are refreshed I could never sleep more than three hours if in trouble I feel assured all trials are for our good if we call on Father. ----- new page (MSSSC2049_p021.jpg) The north is blest as well as the South with a Temple this week they have had them opened how pleased the people in the North will be While living in Sl City. we took two families in Br & Sister Turner they stayed with us four months and B Mitchie hey had ten head of stock the other family was Bt S Michie we stayed with Br & S Stalworthy when we Came in the City we stayed over a month there and moved in to the sisth ward then lived in the Sugar House ward We can see we are living in importants times for many years the saints had peace now Satan is stiring up the wicked to slay the Prophets of God, woe woe to this generation those that harden their hearts against the truth. blessed are they that are slain for they died while working for their master their Crown is waiting for them we can not feel sorry for them but their wives & Children well feel bad time will heal their wounds but it will take time. It seems to me the men that is killed will be rememembered like Paul Peter Joseph and others through all Coming time Oh that I had the power to comfort their families but I know our heavenly Father Can Comfort those that mourn, when we reflect upon their murderers the Awful doom that awaits them and we know they must suffer the wrath of God.
