Today we held our Anual Conference, we hav[-] three meetings, Pretty well atended by the Outside Population and very well atended by the Saints. There was a good spirit prevading the harts of those who came in humility and submition, Bro Brook- -banks was here from the office at Liver -pool, He gave us an excelent account of His former life and Convirtion, And spoke with a good spirit in the morning. I think it is called one of the Grandest in the world, We strolled through Regent Park It is verry large and Beautifull. We then went to the, Madam Tussaud Waxworks. July 13, Saturday, 89 } New haven England } Fair, Bro Hunt & I went to Cooks Office and got some French money, We see some fine building and see a store on fire, There were a number of Firemen on hand in a short time, but It must have been 40 minut tes after they came, before a stream of water was brought to bare on the fire ----- new page (MSS961_F1_031.jpg) if the Buildings had been of wood the fire would have got such a start that distru- ction would have been very great, We left London at 9.15 PM, Thare are eleven of us in company, Three are Ladies We arived at Newhaven to find we would have four hours to wate for the Tide, before we could land on the other side There are three Steamboat lodes of us. Sunday July 14th 89} Paris, France} Stormey, We crossed the ocean this morning in about Five hours, but had to wate some time for the Tide before we could land. We got a little bread and butter, for a shilling wh -ich we were much in need of. And given every chance of an education. But the mistake was I was urged too much, and became so tired of the schoolroom that when I should have got a good education I evaded the schoolroom and only went when forced. In winter of 1864 my Uncle Charles Flake Died He went to the stable to feed his horses and was found sitting against back of stable Dead. High liveing is what was thought to have brought it on. In the year 1868 I was Baptized by Edi Nelson confirmed by John R Murdock. My principle ocupation During the next few years was Handling Stalk and Helping to Clear, Fence and make a Farm. He and I went to arrest a Bank Robber, (called Jim Mason and, Several other names,) Who we had received telegram to take and hold, untill the Officer came from Holbrook. who was following him, Charles engaged him in conversation. I came up behind him and told him we had authority to arrest him. he partly turned and asked what authority. and then made a spring backward. I threw my right arm around his body and gripped his right arm. He drew his pistol With his left and shot right up Between us at me, and filling my face with powder and shoot- ing me through the rim of the left Ear. He then made another spring Backward and got loose. This is the first real sorrow I had ever known, for months I was dazed. and time only made it harder to bear, and every new trouble brings this old one fresh before me. The old man driveing the Fire Works was burned to death and would not let go the Team and save himself Jan 3 1897 Lois was burned while attempt ing to warm, Theresa being up stairs when she heard Lois she rushed down and burned herself very badly in attempting to extinguish the Flames Lois was in terrible agony for two hours, but as soon as we gave her up and dedicated her she never gave any more signs of pain, and died Ten hours after, Theresa was everal weeks before she was able to do any thing. Martha on being aquainted with the fact by telegram returned home from Salt Lake City where she had remained and was attending school. Flake Jan ,1922 Nellie died in Toronto, Canada and was brought home for burial. Her little son Henry Campbell Burns who was born on Nov. 11, 1921 was brought to us to look after. He weighed only about four pounds at two months old. With the very careful nursing of Martha he over- came a bad case of "thrush" and by taking him from our nurse to another for his meals he in time became normal.
