American Government Documents: The official U.S. Government searchable website for all American government documents. Subject content is as varied and in-depth as Congress or the executive desires. Many of the documents found here are considered primary sources.

American National Legislation and Bills: A function of the Library of Congress, Thomas provides a web searchable platform for finding bills or pending legislation, Senate or House reports, committee reports or other information used by legislators to craft bills and/or legislation.

Campaign Finance: see Congressional Universe, under "Members." This has online data from campaign finance reports filed to the Federal Elections Commission by all members of Congress, showing who contributed how much to whom and when.

Five Thirty-eight (political and economic data)

ICPSR (Inter-university Consortium on Political and Social Research): Founded and maintained by the University of Michigan, this site provides access to consortium members (of which, BYU is one) to a variety of political and social data sets and indexes. Almost all of the data is stored on tapes at the University of Michigan but increasingly data can be ftp'd to consortium members, or, failing that, can be accessed by hardwired terminals located in the Kimball Tower. Students, faculty, or researchers wishing to access ICPSR data are invited to contact the SWKT CSR, Joe Olsen, 1145 SWKT or 8-6296, for specific details on obtaining data.

News Sources

Drudge Report: Hollywood-based Matt Drudge may not be the world's best reporter, but his website contains links to an extraordinary number of legitimate news organizations, both American and Foreign, and by virtue of this is an excellent site for political news. In addition, it is one of a very few sites where links to political columnists and analysts can be found in a single place.

40 Resources for Political Science Majors

American Political Science Association: The official website for the preeminent American political science organization, the American Political Science Association, including meeting dates and locales, and activities for members.

Pi Sigma Alpha (Political Science Honor Society): Pi Sigma Alpha is the national honor society for political science, and is closely affiliated with the American Political Science Association. BYU has one of the largest and most active chapters of PSA, including scholarships and essay prizes. The site is maintained as part of the APSA organization in Washington, D.C.

Columbia University: Lehman Library: A list of political science resources on American government, comparative government, and international relations compiled by Columbia University librarians at the Lehman Library.

Columbia University: School of International and Public Affairs: Has links to African and Asian information, as well as some on Latin American and the Middle East.  It also has a link to war and peace information.  Links to sites on the Asia-Pacific Economic Congrence (APEC) are also found here as well as human rights links.

Georgetown University: The Georgetown University School of Foreign Service site has many links to its publications, including selected full text articles from the Georgetown Journal of International Affairs and the National Security Studies Quarterly.

George Washington University: George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs has a link to research centers, and hosts the Sigur Center for Asian Studies

Johns Hopkins University: The Paul H. Nitze School of International Studies at Johns Hopkins University is a widely respected site, with links to several international relations and comparative government sites, sorted by region and by topic.

Marketplace of Political Ideas: This University of Houston site collates a number of websites that have something to do with some aspect of political science.

MIT: The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has a Center for International Studies, and this site has a link entitled "Research and Working Papers" which provide original research.

Political Science Organizations & Associations: This site is maintained by Indiana University and is a list of almost all national and international political science/international relations organizations to which one may  belong, with appropriate addresses, etc.

Politics and Ideas: Resource Library

Presidential Libraries and Museums (National Archives): This site is maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration, which has legal responsibility for archiving the presidents' papers. It lists all the presidential libraries and research centers that have been established, from Herbert Hoover to George Bush.

Sponsored Research Centers Directory:  This site at Arizona State University is a list of many of the sponsored research offices at nearly every American university, except BYU.

Tufts University: The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Boston is the oldest program in international relations in America.  This site includes online resources for international relations and diplomacy, history, politics, economics and international economy.  Information on IGOs, regional studies and research centers are also listed.

University of California:  The Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation at University of California at San Diego includes a number of interesting online resources and links, including, among many others, Wired for Peace (Northeast Asia), Climate Science Policy, the New E-Economy, Governing the Global Internet, Globalization and Governance.  Hit the publications button for policy papers and newsletters.

University of Chicago: Online Working Papers from the Irving B. Harris School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago include the Chicago Policy Review.

University of Houston: This site collates a number of website that have something to do with some aspect of political science.

The Weatherhead Center for International Affairs:  The Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University is a widely respected site, with links to several international relations and comparative government sites, sorted by region and by topic.

Public Policy

American Public Policy: For background and other information on sources of American public policy, mostly of a national or large regional level of analysis.

Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management

The Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania: "The Annenberg Public Policy Center was established by publisher and philanthropist Walter Annenberg in 1994 to create a community of scholars within the University of Pennsylvania who would address public policy at the local, state, and federal levels. Consistent with the mission of the Annenberg School for Communication, the Center has four ongoing foci: 1) Information and Society; 2) Media and the Developing Mind; 3) Media and the Dialogue of Democracy; and 4) Health Communications."

Ethics and Public Policy: The Ethics and Public Policy Center was established in 1976 to clarify and reinforce the bond between Judeo-Christian moral traditions and the public debate over domestic and foreign policy. The Center affirms the political relevance of the great Western ethical imperatives--respect for dignity of every person, individual freedom and responsibility, justice, the rule of law, and limited government. It maintains that moral reasoning is an essential complement to empirical calculations in the shaping of public policy.

Strategic Studies
The Acronym Institute for Disarmament Diplomacy (UK)

Center for Nonproliferation Studies:  Site maintained by the Monterrey Institute of International Studies

Center for Strategic and International Studies: The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a public policy research institution dedicated to analysis and policy impact covering key function areas such as international finance, U.S. domestic and economic policy, and U.S. foreign policy and national security issues.

Disarmament Diplomacy: "DFax is a project of the Farndon House Information Trust, a registered charity in Britain which promotes the use and understanding of online information technology in researching international security affairs. It is unique. Founded by a group of academic researchers in 1988, the Trust acquired the DFax project from its founders in 1993. Everyday, DFax uses online services to access an extensive range of specialist journals, wire services, and newspapers around the globe. The data retrieved is then speedily analyzed and abstracted by a skilled team of researchers. It is then used to sustain DFax services and projects."

International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS)

The International Policy Institute for Counter-Terrorism: ICT is a research institute and think tank dedicated to developing innovative public policy solutions to international terrorism. The Policy Institute applies an integrated, solutions-oriented approach built on a foundation of real world and practical experience.

NATO: The official site for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and details some of NATO's current projects and events.

SIPRI: The official site of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, a major arms and disarmament organization.

The Terrorism Research Center: "The Terrorism Research Center is dedicated to informing the public of the phenomena of terrorism and information warfare. This site features essays and thought pieces on current issues, as well as links to other terrorism documents, research and resources."

War Studies Review, King's College, London: This is a significant online journal from King's College, London, which deals with the scholarly study of war and its causes. A good place to get current analysis of wars and near wars.
