Permission to publish material from Records of the Director of Wilkinson Center and Student Activities, 1938-1974 must be obtained from the Supervisor of Reference Services and/or the Special Collections Board of Curators.
The register to this collection relates to three series of records: 1. Those produced by student organizations coordinators who functioned from 1946-1966. 2. Records produced by ASBYU Student Activities and Government offices from 1950 to present. 3. Records created by the director's office of the Wilkinson Center and Student Activities, which date back to 1940. Since the major portion of each series relates to student government and activities, it was thought best to consolidate the three series into one collection but still retain each series separately within the collection and the register. A more detailed scope note follows.
Researchers may also find additional material about student activities and government by referring to the scope note for the series titled, "ASBYU Student Activities and Government," as found in this register.
"Student Organizations Coordinator, 1946-1966" Series: The files of the Student Organizations Coordinator comprised of 29 boxes or ten linear feet of material, are records created or collected by the office of C. Lavar Rockwood, 1962-1966, who served as the last student organizations coordinator. The records extend from 1946-1966. Prior coordinators have been Paul Felt, 1957-1962; Henry L. Isaksen, 1953-1957; Royden Braithwaite, 1952-1953; Harold Glen Clark, 1951-1952; Ellvert H. Himes, 1949-1951; John F. Jones, 1947-1949; Thomas Broadbent, 1946-1947.
The coordinator was responsible to the Dean of Students. He served as a faculty and administrative representative to the various student government councils. His primary functions were: 1) Counsel officers and members of student organizations about development and leadership of their programs. 2) Advise student groups on University policies and regulations governing student affairs. 3) Supervise registration of student groups and their functions as required by established University procedures. 4) Coordinate Student Government, advise correct procedure for conducting elections, organization of committees, etc. 5) Approve and generally supervise all social affairs on and off campus. (Time, place, conduct, chaperones, etc.) 6) Register all student activities elsewhere on or off campus. (Mass meetings, rallies, parades, sales, forums, etc.) 7) Counsel with the Wilkinson Center Directorate on the program for students, provide a roster of eligible students for Union Committee positions, recommend and assist in selecting student leaders for the Union Board, and assist the Directorate in recommending policy and procedure for approval by the policy committee.
It should be noted that many of the records in the Rockwood files are records of the student government officers, committees and social and service organizations.
"ASBYU Student Activities and Government" Series: Records contained in U.A. 460b are those records created by ASBYU Student Activity and Government offices as housed in the Wilkinson Center. The records are predominately after 1960, but there are a few records dating to 1950. The register is arranged by the name of the particular office or governing body.
ASBYU student government offices have been housed in the Maeser Memorial Building, prior to 1952; Herald R. Clark Building, 1952-1964; and the Wilkinson Center, 1964 to present. For additional historical material about student body government and activities, the researcher should consult the bound volumes of student body histories, arranged by year; the student clubs and organizations files; ASBYU Printed Matter material and the BYU Centennial multi-volume history in the front section of the Archives.
"Director of Wilkinson Center and Student Activities" Series: The papers accumulated by the Director of Wilkinson Center and Student Activities date back to 1940 and extend to the present. Included in the papers are also records of the assistants to the director including program director, business director, and student advisors.
The office of director of the Wilkinson Center was created in 1960 with the appointment of Lyle S. Curtis who assisted in the planning of the building which was completed in 1964. After the termination of the student coordinator of student organizations position held by Lavar C. Rockwood, 1962-1966, Curtis also became director of student activities. In 1970, Curtis also was appointed assistant to the dean of students.
The Wilkinson Center is considered a unique operation as it involves the student government operation and the incoming producing facilities of the building. The director and his assistants guide and coordinate student government and activities and coordinate other programs and facilities of the building.
See above Scope and Content Note for arrangement of collection. The container numbers start over with each series.
