The Department of
Communications at Brigham Young University was created in response to an
increasing demand for professionals who could facilitate mass media
communication and the transfer of ideas among people. The present day
Communications Department, a division of the College of Fine Arts and
Communications, is located in the George H. Brimhall building on the south end
of the BYU campus. The Communications Department offers bachelor degrees in
Public Relations, Advertising and Marketing Communications, Broadcast
Journalism, Communications Studies, and Print Journalism, and a Masters degree
in Mass Communications.
This collection consists of seven
series, namely the American Society of Newspaper Editors, Building Project,
Minutes, Miscellaneous Communications Material, Communications Classes,
Correspondence, and Faculty Data (restricted). The
first series contains ASNE materials, newsletters, and information about the
American Society of Newspaper Editors. The second series contains information
about the building of a new communications building. The third series contains
meeting minutes. The fourth series contains miscellaneous information
pertaining to the Department of Communications, such as scholarship
information, ASJSA Roundtable information, and department information. The
fifth series contains materials used for communications classes over the years.
The sixth series contains correspondence to and from people in the Department
of Communications. The last series contains faculty data sheets and is
classified as restricted information.

Transferred from Records Management September 2005; also found in the
Stacks.
Access
Restricted. Closed for 25 years after the creation of the records and
thereafter open to the public after consultation with the University Archivist
and in accordance with the General Restriction Statement of the L. Tom Perry
Special Collections. The Faculty Data series may be accessed only with
permission of the University Archivist and the L. Tom Perry Special Collections
Board of Curators.

Biographical History
The Department of Communications at Brigham Young University was
created in response to an increasing demand for professionals who could
facilitate mass media communication and the transfer of ideas among people. The
