Organizational History
The Department of Technology finds it beginnings with the arrival of
Dr. Ross McArthur at Brigham Young University in 1956. Dr. McArthur developed
plans for a four-year Machine Tool Technology program, which was originally
organized under the department of Industrial Education. In 1962 the program's
name was changed to Tool and Manufacturing Technician, and again in 1964 to
Tool and Manufacturing Technology. In 1965, Tool and Manufacturing Technology
became part of the newly formed College of Industrial and Technical Education,
and the name was simplified to Manufacturing Technology. Other technology
programs were also developed, including Electronics and Building
Construction.
In 1965, after meeting with the National Association of Industrial
Technology, Dr. McArthur announced that BYU would change the department title
from Industrial Technology to Engineering Technology. In conjunction with this
change, the department would seek accreditation from the Engineers' Council for
Professional Development (ECPD). Although accreditation was opposed by the
engineering faculty, the ECPD accredited the Manufacturing Engineering
Technology in 1967. In the following years the Drafting and Design Technology
and Electronics programs were also accredited.
Then in 1973, the College of Industrial and Technical Education was
dissolved and the department was made part of the new College of Engineering
Science and Technology. While the engineering faculty again objected, what is
now known as the School of Technology eventually found its place in the
college. Today the school offers programs and degrees in Construction
Management, Facilities Management, Industrial Design, Information Technology,
Manufacturing Engineering Technology, and Technology Teacher Education.
Department chairs/School directors include: Ross McArthur (1960-1978),
Kay F. Brown (1978-1979), John J. Kunzler (1983-1985), E. Max Raisor
