wives of Mormon Church leader, Daniel H. Wells, and a portrait of George
Alley's wife, Mary Symond Alley. A majority of the photos were taken by Salt
Lake City photographer Charles R. Savage. The photographs are albumen and matte
collodion process.ProvenanceThe bulk of these materials were originally owned by George Alley. At
his death they went into the possession of his son Stephen Webb Alley, who
added some documents to the collection. After Stephen's death in 1921 at
Bancroft, Idaho, the documents remained in the Alley family. In about 1968,
they came into the possession of Stephen L. Alley, who donated them to the BYU
Archives on 17 July, 1984.

Biographical HistoryGeorge Alley (December 30, 1792 - November 18, 1859) was born in Lynn,
Mass. He was married to Mary Symonds in 1822 and moved with his family to Salem
about ten years later where they were taught the gospel by Erastus Snow and
Benjamin Winchester. They operated a store in Salem. The Alleys were Baptized
in 1842, and moved to Nauvoo that same year. George Alley had a store in
Nauvoo, the main business of which was shoemaking. The Family crossed the
Mississippi in the summer of 1846. On September 20, 1848, they entered the Salt
Lake Valley.
Scope and Content NoteThe material in this collection was generated by George Alley, and
some of his children and descendants. The collection includes account and
receipt books from Salem, Mass., Nauvoo, and Salt Lake City. Also included, are
letters between family members, a journal page of George Alley, a diary of
Stephen Webb Alley, genealogy and family history materials (including xerox
copies of photographs), and various memorabilia. Most of the material covers a
period from 1834 to 1899.
