Edith, who died unmarried in 1949, left her camera and darkroom equipment along with photographs and glass plate negatives to the family. Her collection was in the Irvine family’s possession until it was donated to the Brigham Young University Library in February 1988 by Jim Irvine, Edith’s nephew, son of her older brother, Robert. The Irvine family owned at least five homes in the Mokelumne Hill Area of California and each time they sold a home all of their possessions, including Edith’s photographs, negatives and photographic equipment moved to another home, until they were found in the basement in two trunks of the last home owned by the family.
This collection is open to public use. However, the gelatin dry plate negatives are restricted. Proofs of the negatives and original photographs are kept in cold storage and access requires 24 hours advance notice. Permission to publish material from the Edith Irvine Photograph Collection must be obtained from the Reference Supervisor, L. Tom Perry Special Collections, and the L. Tom Perry Board of Curators.
It is the responsibility of the researcher to obtain any necessary copyright clearances.

Lizzie Edith Irvine was born 7 January 1884 in Sheep Ranch, Calaveras County, California to Thomas Hanna Irvine and Mary Irene Hills. Like her mother, Irene, Edith was always known by her middle name. Sheep Ranch was part of the flourishing mountain gold fields of northern California. Undoubtedly her father, Thomas, a gold miner, was working at one of the five flourishing gold mines of this bustling mining town. Gold was discovered in 1860 at the massive sheep corral, hence the name of the town. Patented in 1880, the town also boasted 15 saloons. Edith’s grandfather, William Irvine, was the youngest child in a family of nine children, all born in Ireland. In 1846 he immigrated to New York with his older brother, James. Both William and James came to California as a part of the 1849 gold rush and became miners. The brothers did well, especially James, Edith’s great uncle, who became prominent in southern California as the owner of the massive 110,000 acre Irvine Ranch in Orange County. He also developed a strong produce and grocery business in San Francisco, along with real estate holdings, and after his marriage owned a home in San Francisco at Folsom and Eleventh streets. It is believed that Edith’s grandfather, William, was also successful in his mining ventures and in real estate. When James Irvine died on 15 March 1886, he directed in his will that over $100,000 should be provided his wife, brothers, sisters, and other relatives through the liquidation of many of his properties. Substantial land gifts, not to exceed the value of $5,000 were also to be given family members from his holdings in southern California. It is not known whether William received any funds, but certainly his son, Thomas, Edith’s father, seems to have acquired property and some financial independence, perhaps as a result of his uncle James bequest. “Billy” Plunkett, indicates in her master’s project on Edith, that the “family fortunes increased due to acquisitions of mines and other real estate,” and that the Irvine family became part of the “upper social strata of the area.” Edith apparently often visited with family members in San Francisco and southern California. With her birth, Edith joined her older brother, christened as Robin Reddick, but known throughout his life as Robert or Bob, who was born 30 April 1882. They were close friends and companions throughout their lives. Perhaps that closeness came about in part because it was just the two of them, as a younger brother born 13 February 1886, Thomas Clinton, died in infancy. Edith remained unmarried throughout her life and Robert didn’t marry until he was 60 years old—their marital status undoubtedly contributed to their closeness as they all continued to live together in the family home now in Mokelumne Hill, California, where they had moved in 1900. It is unclear exactly when Edith became intrigued by photography, although in her early teens she had already created a darkroom in a rear corner of the house in Mokelumne Hill, or Moke Hill as the natives call it. And by the time she was fourteen, in 1898, she was already photographing the extensive Electra Power Project—the first hydroelectric power project in California. This project, near her home on the Mokelumne River, California, was completed in 1902. Her work at that young age is impressive in documenting a monumental civil engineering project. Her next great photographic venture, and certainly the epitome of her brief photography career, came at the age of 22, documenting the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Her compelling photographs draw you into the devastation and even humor of the earthquake experiences. In 1910 she considered herself a professional photographer as noted on the census, but for reasons unknown, by 1920 her occupation was school teacher. Anecdotal stories that “Billy” Plunkett gathered for her master’s project, indicate that Edith had long red hair and that she loved to ride her horses and drive her Model T Ford. In her later year no one outside of the family seemed to be aware of her photographs. But one of her former students characterized her as fair, but strict, and a good teacher. Edith’s life was difficult both physically and emotionally. She apparently suffered from severe joint pains of unknown origin, which were treated by her doctor with painkillers. This resulted over time in her becoming addicted. Later she developed into an alcoholic—all of which caused severe mental deterioration as well as the expected physical deterioration. In addition she began to lose her hearing at an early age, until by 45 years old she had become severely hearing impaired. She never recovered from the medical and emotional problems that she suffered from in her later years. Not long after her brother Bob, was granted legal guardianship for her on 8 June 1949, she died at age of 65. It was with the donation in 1988 by her nephew Jim Irvine, Bob’s son, that her photographic talents became known outside of her family circle.
The collection contains 275 gelatin dry plate negatives, 17 photographic prints and 1 tintype. All 275 gelatin dry plate negatives are accepted to have been made by Edith and include 60 of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake; 23 of Yosemite National Park; 79 of the Electra Power Project; 86 of Mokelumne Hill, Calaveras County, California; 5 miscellaneous and 22 personal and family related. Edith is the photographer for 2 of the prints, 4 were taken by other specified photographers, and 12 are unknown. The earliest photographs in the collection are a tintype and an albumen cart-de-visite; the cart-de-visite is a copy of the tintype. The subject of the photograph is a young woman in her late teens or early 20s. The woman has been previously identified as Edith Irvine, but further investigation has led us to conclude that it is Edith’s mother, Irene. Several factors have been considered in coming to the conclusion that the image is not Edith. First, in early acquisition paperwork, the tintype was identified as Irene even though the cart-de-visite was identified as Edith. Second, chronologically, the next photograph in the collection is also the only other portrait in the collection that is albumen and is of Edith and her brother Bob when they were only about four and six years old. All subsequent portraits are printed on the more modern gelatin or collodion photographic paper. Third, even though facial features of the tintype portrait are similar with the rest of Edith’s portraits, there are some major differences, the most notable being the size of the forehead from the hairline to the eyebrows. Therefore, the tintype is believed to have been taken around 1879. The first photographs known to have been taken by Edith were made when she was between the ages of fourteen and eighteen (1898-1902). These images record the building of the Electra Power Project, the first hydroelectric power project in California. Construction on the project began in 1898, near her home on the Mokelumne River, California, and was completed in 1902. Family tradition says that Edith was hired for this project by Standard Electric of California, the predecessor of Pacific Gas & Electric Company, but no records have been found to substantiate that. Nevertheless, her work at that young age is impressive in documenting a monumental civil engineering project. Dennis Rowley eloquently described her “Electra” images in the 1990 exhibit catalog: “Irvine’s images of the project are simultaneously documentation and art. From her methodical record of the powerful struggles of man and beast to build a dam to harness the powers of nature emanates a flood of powerful images.” When the earth shook in San Francisco at 5:15 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 1906, followed by devastating fires, Edith Irvine was there. Her photographic distinction undoubtedly rests on her startling ability to capture the moods of this time and place as the family story indicated she “commandeered an abandoned baby buggy” for her photographic equipment and took photographs all day and for as many as three days after. Apparently twenty-two year old Irvine was either staying in San Francisco with a relative or was planning to leave by boat for an around the world voyage at the time of the earthquake and consequently had her photographic equipment with her. Individuals with an interest in Mokelumne Hill, California, will be pleased to see the 85 images of this remarkably interesting early gold rush town. Founded in 1848 by Oregonians, it grew to be one of the richest gold mining towns in California. Of course, by the time Edith took these photographs, the flush of gold rush prosperity had long since faded, but the town, registered as a California Historical Landmark, reveals its charm through her photographs. The small manuscript collection, donated by Edith’s nephew, Jim Irvine, in 1988 consists of photocopies of thirteen family letters ranging from 1905-1947. Their contents are primarily family history. There is also a photocopy of a 1939 letter from a doctor reporting on Edith’s condition, Edith’s teaching certificate for elementary school, and photocopies of certificates to membership in the Order of the Eastern Star, the guardianship papers, issued near the time of her death, and a copy of her obituary.
The gelatin dry plate negatives are each given an identifying number and are arranged topically and then by size with the 1906 San Francisco earthquake photographs comprising 1-60; the Yosemite National Park, images 61-83; Electra Power Project images 84-162; Mokelumne Hill area, California, images 163-248; miscellaneous, images 249-253; personal and family images, 254-275. As there was no information on the negatives or in a list that accompanied the collection donation, the descriptions, titles, and dates of the photographs have been developed through the processing of the collection. The original prints and tintype are arranged by identifying number and continue the numbering from the gelatin dry place negatives, 276-292. Copy prints were made of each gelatin dry plate negative and are found in Boxes 6-7, using the same numbering as the negatives. The manuscript material is arranged at the end of collection contained in three folders, with the photocopies of the family letters arranged chronologically from the earliest, 1905 to the latest 1947.
Jim Irvine also donated a copy of William Bronson’s book on the 1906 San Francisco earthquake entitled The Earth Shook, The Sky Burned. This book was published in New York by Doubleday in 1959. The book has been separated from the collection and added to the American collection in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections.

This is a portrait of Irene with a chain around her neck. She has long, wavy hair halfway pulled up and streaming down her shoulders. She is wearing a white dress with a dark bow around her neck and a light ribbon around her waist. Appears to be a copy of the tintype, image #289. Carte-de-Visite Albumen. Photographer is John Pitcher Spooner, Stockton, CA. NOTE: This photograph has been previously identified as Edith Irvine, but further investigation has led us to conclude that it is Edith’s mother, Irene.
