Edwin Nelson Ferdon Jr.
(1913 June 14-2002) is an ethnologist noted for his studies of the peoples of
Polynesia and the Americas. He earned his bachelors degree from the University
of New Mexico and a masters from the University of Southern California. He
worked as a museum curator, researcher, and associate director in Southwestern
cultural heritage institutions, retiring in 1983 from the Arizona State Museum,
University of Arizona.
This register provides a description of
288 photographic prints made from nitrate negatives of ancient ruins in Mexico,
Guatemala, and Honduras from 1906-1951. Sites included: La Quemada, Xochicalco,
Tajin, Teotihuacan, Tepozteco, Cuicuilco, Tenayuca, Mitla, Monte Alban,
Cuernavaca, Teopanzolco, Tula (Hidalgo), Iximche, Kaminaljuyu, Utatlan,
Zaculeu, Copan, Quirigua, and Tonala. Most of the photographs were taken by
archaeologists Edwin N. Ferdon and Edgar Lee Hewitt. All photographs are
labeled.
Provenance
The slides and negatives in this collection were donated by Edwin
Ferdon to John Clark of the New World Archaeology Department. Fred Nelson, also
from the Department, brought them in to Special Collections.

Negatives restricted. Photo prints are available for public access.
Kept in cold storage; Access requires 24 hours advance notice.
Conditions of Use

Scope and Content Note
This register provides a description of 288 photographic prints made
from nitrate negatives of ancient ruins in Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras from
1906-1951. Sites included: La Quemada, Xochicalco, Tajin, Teotihuacan,
Tepozteco, Cuicuilco, Tenayuca, Mitla, Monte Alban, Cuernavaca, Teopanzolco,
Tula (Hidalgo), Iximche, Kaminaljuyu, Utatlan, Zaculeu, Copan, Quirigua, and
Tonala. Most of the photographs were taken by archaeologists Edwin N. Ferdon
and Edgar Lee Hewitt. All photographs are labeled.
