Pinto is located on Pinto Creek, in a narrow valley approximately one and a half miles wide. The town lies about forty-two miles northeast of St. George by road and twenty-eight miles southwest of Cedar City. The area was first settled in the fall of 1856 by Indian missionaries serving in Southern Utah. Rufus C. Allen, president of the Indian Mission at that time, was among the first settlers and presided over the settlement for six months until Jacob Hamblin replaced him as president of the Indian Mission, at which time Hamblin appointed Richard S. Robinson to preside over the settlement. By 17 July 1859, Pinto had increased in size to the point that it was made a branch of the Church, with Richard S. Robinson acting as presiding Elder. On 11 July 1867 the branch was turned into a ward, with Robinson as bishop. The bishops that followed were Robert Knell, 1876; Robert C. Knell, 1897; Heber E. Harrison, 1903. In 1916 the Pinto Ward was dissolved because most of the settlers had relocated to a new settlement named Newcastle, twelve miles north of Pinto.
