The whole of the Paul R. Cheesman Collection was donated by his wife, Millie Cheesman, in three phases. The first donation consisted of eleven boxes, te second donation contained fourteen boxes, with the final installment being 9,470 slides. Millie Cheesman made these contributions to Brigham Young University from February to December 1992.

Dr. Paul Robert Cheesman, well known for his study of ancient American
archaeology and ancient scripture, served as an instructor for the Department
of Religious Education at Brigham Young University from 1963 to 1986. His
extensive, worldwide research concerning
Born May 31, 1921, in Brigham City, Utah, Paul Robert Cheesman was the youngest child of Frederick and Ella Vera Hanson Cheesman. He was preceded by two sisters, Edith and Phyllis, and a brother, Grant. Cheesman’s father, Frederick, worked as a building contractor until he died from a heart condition when Paul was only nine years old. To make ends meet, Ella Vera took up employment at a local laundry while Paul sold soap door-to-door. At the age of fourteen, Cheesman was granted a driver’s license by the State of California, which made it possible for him to maintain a paper route as a second source of income. After his 15th birthday, Cheesman lost his mother to cancer. Although the loss of both parents during childhood was hard, it helped Cheesman develop self-sufficiency and responsibility that were valuable to him throughout his life. After the deaths of his parents, and with the help of those around him, Cheesman took responsibility for his own education. At seventeen, he enrolled at San Diego State College. While there, Cheesman met and dated Millie Rubey Foster who grew up in her childhood in Cache Valley, Utah. Paul and Millie put their relationship on hold for two years while Cheesman accepted the call to serve a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Southern States Mission. (2) Elder Cheesman’s zeal for missionary work was demonstrated when he and his companion produced a small local radio show about the Gospel and the LDS church.
After returning from his mission, Cheesman again enrolled at San Diego State College. Although his ambition had been to pursue a career as a doctor of general medicine, he reevaluated his goal and transferred his accumulating credit hours from medicine to education. This facilitated an earlier graduation with a Bachelor of Arts in Education on June 12, 1944 and also his entrance into a teaching career. A few weeks later, Paul and Millie were married on June 29, 1944 in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. (3)
After graduation, Cheesman and his wife moved to Linda Vista, California, where Paul was hired as a teacher of science and physical education at Kearney High School. He also assisted in the development and implementation of a new curriculum of basic photography. Cheesman supplemented his degree in education with classes in photography taught by Edger J. Goodspeed at the University of California, Los Angeles. During his years in Linda Vista, Cheesman also served as a seminary teacher and owned his own professional photography studio. He managed the studio from 1949 until 1952 when, as a member of the Volunteer Reserve, he was stationed at the Naval Training Center in San Diego, serving as a Chaplain during the Korean War. Through these years Cheesman also was a member of The Professional Photographers of America.
In 1955, Cheesman ended his military service and moved his family from San Diego to Miami, Florida. He attended the University of Miami, furthering his graduate studies with courses in business and administration. During his time in Miami, Cheesman was named President of the Foster Corporation, a Central American conglomerate and construction company owned by his brother-in-law, Grant Foster. The Corporation was a key figure in the construction of the massive Pan-American Highway and the widening of the Panama Canal. Cheesman’s position required him to serve as a liaison between South, Central, and North American governments and as the leader of a large cross-cultural, multi-ethnic work force. To better fulfill his responsibilities, Cheesman learned and used the Spanish language. (4) He was also required to travel to numerous countries including Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.
In 1955, while overseeing the widening of the Panama Canal, Cheesman visited the rainforests of Costa Rica and there unearthed his first ancient artifact. During the following years, as his workers excavated the land to prepare it for construction, Cheesman saw them plow through scores of ancient burial mounds and communities. At the time there was little global awareness concerning the collection and preservation of ancient artifacts. The federal government had not yet installed regulations mandating the immediate halting of construction and notification of the proper authorities when cultural remains were discovered. Cheesman, although only an amateur archaeologist, did his best to conserve what he could even though much was destroyed.
The accidental uncovering of archeological sites motivated Cheesman to
take trips to research and collect artifacts. This in turn led to the growth of
a vast personal collection of pre-Columbian artifacts, which he related to

In 1967 Cheesman began serving on the Church’s Book of Mormon
Committee, and, in 1968, he was named research director and writer for a
multi-volume work entitled
In 1971, true to his desire, Cheesman’s dissertation led to the production of the well-known film and LDS missionary tool, “Ancient America Speaks.” (12) Cheesman served as a major researcher for and contributor to the film. After its production the film was translated and distributed in seventeen different languages. Dr. Cheesman then produced several more projects, including a filmstrip entitled, “Ancient America Speaks” (13) and a 16mm film entitled “So Let It Be Written” devoted to ancient writings on metal plates uncovered throughout the world. (14) He produced of “The Lost Manuscript,” (15) a film that tells the LDS story of Martin Harris’s experience with the lost book of Lehi. Cheesman also contributed to the Brigham Young University Motion Picture Studio’s production of “The First Vision,” the story of the boy-prophet, Joseph Smith. (16)
In 1975, after 3 years as an associate professor, Dr. Cheesman became a full professor at BYU and began teaching basic photography in addition to religious topics. He began serving on the Centennial, Athletic, and Film Committees at BYU, all the while remaining a “popularizer” of ancient scriptural archaeology at Brigham Young University. Apart from the film and book projects he produced, Cheesman also published over fifteen short articles in a number of magazines and newspapers including: The Improvement Era, The Instructor, The Ensign, The Orbit, and The Church News. On the side, he served as an assistant for the Church History Tour, and as director of the ‘Round the World, South American, and Israel Tours offered through BYU.

In 1980, the Cheesmans were called to serve as President of the Louisiana Baton Rouge Mission. As President, Cheesman presided over an average of 175 missionaries for a three-year term. Because they entered the field shortly after the groundwork was laid for the building of the Atlanta Temple, the Cheesmans had to handle numerous anti-Mormon publications and religious critics. The renewed awareness of the Mormons in the South fueled a fire of revivalism and allowed Cheesman to do what he loved most: Teach.
Upon his return to Brigham Young University, Dr. Cheesman continued to
contribute a number of scholarly works for publication, and, in keeping with
the popular works and tracks of research he had already established, Cheesman
again commenced his promotion of Book of Mormon archaeology and missionary
work. Following LDS President Ezra Taft Benson’s 1985 call to read
Because of his wish to expose the history and nature of the original American peoples, Dr. Cheesman was the recipient of two scholarly honors in 1986: distinction as an International Epigraphic Society Fellow, and the Spencer W. Kimball Lamanite Award. The former was awarded, by nomination, to those who “devote their time and scholarship to the study of ancient glyphs and writings.” (18) His photographs of writing on and inscription in stone, metal, and papyrus-like mediums were invaluable because they preserved evidence of lost artifacts. The latter honor was presented to Cheesman because of his efforts and “scholarly contributions to the Lamanite cause and the field of Indian Studies in the Americas.” (19) Prior to his retirement, Dr. Dale Tingey said, “Before his death, President Kimball approved of Dr. Cheesman’s nomination as a candidate worthy of this award.” (20)
In the spring of 1986, after 22 years of faithful service on Brigham Young University campus as: Professor of the Book of Mormon, the Old and New Testaments, Gospel Principles and Practice, and External Evidences of the Book of Mormon, twice receiving The Outstanding Educator of America Award; director of numerous university and community projects; and author, producer, and devotee to ancient American studies for 35 years; Cheesman announced his retirement.
Shortly thereafter, to ease Cheesman’s diabetes, the couple moved to St. George, Utah. Their stay, however, was short lived, due to the fact that in the winter of 1990 the Cheesmans were called to serve as Directors of the LDS Visitor’s Center in Manhattan, New York. While there, the Cheesmans oversaw the activities of the senior couples serving in the Visitor’s Center. The center offered films, lectures, and opportunities to conduct family history research. The Cheesmans had served for ten months when, in November of 1991, Cheesman experienced a massive heart attack and, with his wife, was flown to LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City. On Wednesday, November 13, 1991, Cheesman passed away. He was in his seventieth year, and was survived by his wife, Millie, five sons, Brian, Ross, Douglas, Larry, Jay, one daughter, Lee Anne, a sister, Edith C. Ek, and thirty-one grandchildren.
The Cheesman’s worked side-by-side, overseeing the activities of the senior couples serving in the center. The center offered films, lectures, and family history research to the people of downtown Manhattan. The Visitors Center was housed in a fourth floor professional building complex. On the bottom floor was the foyer and welcoming area, the second floor housed the media and family history center, the third floor had a normal sized chapel for worship, and the fourth floor contained the local Stake offices and facilities. The Cheesman’s had the opportunity to serve in this capacity as directors of the Visitors Center for ten months. In November of 1991, Cheesman experienced a massive heart attack, and the Cheesman’s quickly flew to Salt Lake City, where he was admitted at LDS Hospital. He immediately underwent triple bypass heart surgery and was placed on life support. On Wednesday, November 13, 1991, after being removed from life support, Cheesman quietly passed away. He was in his seventieth year, and was survived by his supportive wife, Millie, five sons, Brian, Ross, Douglas, Larry, Jay, one daughter, Lee Anne, a sister, Edith C. Ek, and thirty-two grandchildren.
Paul Cheesman’s legacy remains not only in his family, but also in his
publications and contributions to the academic fields he loved. Cheesman’s life
was a constant quest for truth. This journey took him through various research
related experiences that allowed him to use both his temporal and spiritual
knowledge. As a devout Latter-day Saint, the spiritual side of Dr. Cheesman
consistently remained in the forefront of his work. The temporal evidence
supplied by archaeological records complimented his religious convictions. By
popularizing the study of scriptural archaeology, Cheesman’s work opened the
doors for a number of foundations and organizations to maintain the groundwork
he laboriously laid throughout his scholarly life. He will forever be
remembered as an early pioneer and “popularizer” of

The Paul R. Cheesman collection was donated in multiple installments by Mrs. Paul (Millie F.) Cheesman. The collection includes manuscripts (personal and professional papers), publisher’s gallery prints, color transparencies (including 35 mm slides), negatives, color separations, photographs, personal literary materials, research and reference files, audio and visual materials, and historical books, covering over 30 years of research in the ancient Americans, other ancient civilizations, and LDS Church history.
A vast majority of the materials in this collection involve Cheesman’s
interest in relating archaeology to
The majority of the files found in the collection have been kept in the original order the university received them. Where there have been slight modifications to the files has been noted in the provenance, separations statements, and inventory listing. The collection has been filed into twelve separate series, which include separate file folders that are sometimes further separated into sub-folders or envelopes. These series include: Personal Files, U.S. Naval Chaplin Years, General Reference Files, Book of Mormon Reference Files, Class Preparation Files, Ancient American Writing Research Files, Research Papers and General Reference Files, General Index for Research Files, Personal Manuscript Files, Audio and Visual Materials, LDS Church Related Files, and Photographic Related Materials. The university processors established these series as a means to break the collection down for easier accessibility to patrons, many of the subject headings are the original headings used by Dr. Cheesman, but in what series they have been placed in the collection has been at the discretion of the processor’s best judgment. Due to the extensive photocopying and duplicating of materials, much of the materials found in one series of the collection may also be located in another. This phenomenon may necessitate the crossing and combining of series while researching specific topics. The collection has developed over the years into an organic-like structure. To the researcher it may seem scattered and unorganized; this is due to the extensive time elapsed while the items in the collection were being acquired, and because Dr. Cheesman would use a very specific method of collecting and filing data for periods of time; then begin using another method without changing or adapting what he already had to the new system. This has led to a number of outdated indexes and mixing of files. On the whole, the collection has taken on the form of an accumulation of genre types, these types are what the processor attempted to separate into the various series. But, even within the separate series one will find a continuation of genre-type separation where information has been grouped into a general file including: research trips, BYU tour trips, LDS temples, Polynesia, Metal plates, etc. These general files are found throughout the collection, thus the researcher will have to go through a number of files in various series to locate a specific item. The Cheesman register begins with a brief biographical sketch of Paul R. Cheesman, including footnotes, followed by provenance and separation statements, the collection inventory listing, and two addendums, which include a bibliography of Dr. Cheesman’s personal library, and a provenance statement for the artifact portion of the collection held by The Museum of Peoples and Cultures. The call number for the photocopied artifact inventories is MSS 2254. The original binders and disk containing the inventories are in the possession of The Museum of Peoples and Cultures.

Since the L. Tom Perry Special Collections acquired the collection, various common books from Cheesman’s personal library have been cataloged and reshelved in the Harold B. Lee Library’s public areas, with the more rare and out-of-print books having been kept in Special Collection’s stacks. While processing the document portions of the collection (ca. June 14-August 31, 2000), many books and published materials were found and sent to Book Acquisitions in the HBLL. Included were: nine texts, six sets of audio tapes from various General Conference Sessions of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, audio tapes on the Dead Sea Scrolls, six filmstrips of Ancient America Speaks, audiotapes from the World of the book of Mormon Tour, four red binders holding published articles from F.A.R.M.s, and seven copies of the Biblical Archaeology Review: 1986-1989. All of these materials have been documented in a lengthy bibliography found at the end of the register. The specific dates and titles of the original documents can be located in the case file.

This film consists of two reels.
This box contains two reels, one is labeled as “Composite Mag” and the other as “Written.” This film was made with the assistance of Mark E. Peterson. Research was done from 1984-85. The film was made with some resistance from the LDS Audio Visual Dept. and was eventually shelved. Mark E. Peterson took the Film to conference and received permission from the Church Leaders to go forward with the project.
This version was used at the Spokane Worlds Fair outside the Church Pavilion. This film was shown on a number of screens set up outside the pavilion to entertain the patrons in line for the exhibit. This film in its entirety was originally shown in the Liberty Jail Visitors Center and was eventually used in all the Churches Visitors Centers. Upon review of the Missionary Committee, the film was translated into 17 different languages and used extensively in the missionary program for the LDS Church. Millie Cheesman wrote the script and Paul Cheesman narrated.
