In April 1986, following Dr. Campbell's death, Mrs. Campbell decided to move to California. As part of their arrangements to make that move, Mrs. Campbell and her children deeded his papers to Brigham Young University Library and arranged for Dr. David J. Whittaker of this department to go to his home and pick them up. Dr. Whittaker did that, and retained the order essentially as they were when Dr. Campbell used them. That order is still retained in the present arrangement of the collection.

As an educator and as a distinguished historian, Eugene E. Campbell dedicated his life to being a teacher and a mentor to those around him. Prior to his retirement from Brigham Young University as a professor emeritus of history, he taught thousands of undergraduates and helped direct more than sixty students who earned master's degrees and over twenty who earned doctorates. Colleagues and friends described him as a kind and gentle man, as well as a great scholar.
Eugene Campbell was born April 26, 1915 in Tooele, Utah, the fifth child of Edward and Betsy Ann Bowen Campbell. His father, a transplant from Nova Scotia, Canada, was a locomotive engineer at the local Tooele smelter. Edward loved to farm, and grew fruits and vegetables and raised various domestic animals on the family's quarter-acre lot on Main Street. His mother came from a prominent Mormon pioneer family in Tooele and remained an active force in the community. The Campbell family was not well-to-do, but they were frugal and careful and did not want for the necessities of life. Tragically, his father died suddenly when Eugene was fourteen. His mother was soon after elected as county treasurer, enabling the family to survive the Depression better than most.
Eugene had a happy boyhood. He was healthy and athletic and he felt well accepted by his family and the small, close-knit Mormon community. The love he had for out-of-door sports and school encouraged him to enroll in Snow Junior College following his graduation from Tooele High School in 1933. While at Snow, Eugene spent perhaps the most carefree days of his life. For the next two years, he was very active in sports and student government, while maintaining good grades. After receiving his associate's of arts degree in 1935, he decided to go an LDS mission. He was called to serve in Eastern Canada, where the work was difficult, but rewarding. He returned in December 1937, and enrolled at the University of Utah. He graduated in 1939 with high honors, earning a bachelor's degree in history with an English minor.
The same year, on August 11, he married Beth Larsen, a young woman he had met the summer before his senior year in high school and had dated off and on for the next seven years. They would eventually have five children together. Beth would be a great strength to Eugene, which he would more fully come to realize while serving in World War II.
The next few years were very busy for the Campbells. Beth worked as a comptometer operator in Salt Lake while Eugene completed his master's degree in one year, taught LDS seminary part-time, did readings for a professor, and worked another job. From 1940 to 1944, he taught LDS seminary full-time, first in Wayne County, Utah, and then in Magna, Utah.
In the spring of 1944, Campbell was appointed a First Lieutenant in the Chaplain Corps and attended Chaplain School at Harvard University. As a Mormon chaplain in the 71st Infantry Division, he served in a war that he called one of the greatest events in history. He would treasure the memory of what he described as a great adventure, in which he received two battle stars. This time spent in Europe among a variety of people helped him open his eyes and broaden his vision to the world around him.
Upon his discharge in 1946, Campbell became the director of the LDS Institute of Religion at Idaho State University. This was followed by his appointment as associate director of the LDS Institute of Religion at Utah State University.
Campbell received his doctor of philosophy degree in 1952 from the University of Southern California. He specialized in United States history, and more specifically LDS history. His dissertation was entitled "A History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in California--1846-1946." This was but a beginning of his long and productive career as a historian.
In the summer of 1952, Dr. Campbell taught history at Ricks College. He joined the faculty at Brigham Young University in 1956, and Dr. Campbell spent the next twenty-four years helping to develop and shape the History Department and the school. During this time, he served in many positions and earned many honors.
Dr. Campbell was relentless in trying to teach the truth to his students. Quoting a friend, he said, "I will never knowingly teach my students something they will have to "unlearn" later on." His achievements are indicative of this dedication and hard work. From June of 1958 to September of 1959, Dr. Campbell was the acting chair of the History Department, and continued to serve as chair from 1960-67. In 1965 he was the chair of the Visiting Professor Lectureships. For four years, he was a tour leader for BYU Tours of Europe and in 1965 was the associate director for the first semester study abroad program at Salzburg, Austria. During the 1967-68 academic year, while on a leave of absence from BYU, Dr. Campbell taught history at the Church College of Hawaii. From 1972-80, he was a board member of the Redd Center for Western Studies. Dr. Campbell was also a member of the Athletic Advisory Council and a two-term member of both the Graduate Council and the Faculty Advisor Council at BYU.
Dr. Campbell influenced many other areas beyond Brigham Young
University. He was a co-founder of the Mormon History Association, serving as
its first vice-president from 1965-66 and its second president from 1966-67.
From 1965-66, he served as president of the BYU chapter of AAUP, and from
1968-69, was the president of the Utah Valley Chapter of the State Historical
Society. In 1968, he became a member of the board of editors for the
Dr. Campbell published many books and articles during his career. Some
books he authored, coauthored, or edited include
Twelve of Dr. Campbell's articles were published in a variety of
journals and encyclopedias. His article published in the 1973
Dr. Campbell retired as Professor Emeritus of History from Brigham
Young University, ending a full and productive tenure. He did not stop working
however. When he passed away on April 10, 1986, he was completing a volume on
Mormon history. Published posthumously in 1987, under the title,
Dr. Campbell continually endeavored in his "uncompromising search for historical truths....he seeks historical truths with balance and with empathy." His ability to impart his knowledge in an interesting and informative manner was of great benefit to his thousands of students and readers. He had a great love for history, particularly the nineteenth century, and was never "content to sing the traditional saga, " which would serve him well in his personal as well as his academic life.

This collection is divided into several main series. Series A contains papers by and about Dr. Campbell. They are arranged chronologically, within the following subheadings: mission to Canada; Campbell's student work; religion teaching materials; school annuals; World War II, chaplain related materials; history teaching materials; faculty member at Brigham Young University (Provo, Utah); personal file.
Series B is focused on Campbell's family. This series contains family histories, letters, memorabilia, journals, and writings. The items are alphabetically arranged according to the family member's names which appear with each item. Family correspondence is in the correspondence series at the end of the collection.
Series C, the Name File, contains professional journal articles, book reviews which were not written by Dr. Campbell. The files are organized alphabetically by author.
Series D, papers relating to his work with Richard Poll on the biography of Hugh B. Brown. This includes Campbell's interview transcripts, notes, drafts, and copies of Hugh B. Brown's correspondence.
Series E contains information about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (L.D.S.church), such as newspaper and magazine articles, L.D.S. produced pamphlets and newsletters, personal notes, and correspondence. The subjects include church policies, religious beliefs, church history, and items about individual L.D.S. church members. The files are organized alphabetically by subject.
Series F, Utah Governor's Historic and Cultural Sites Review Committee, consists of meeting minutes, agendas and site nominations. Believing that some information about the activities of the committee may be learned from the way Dr. Campbell had organized them, we have left them as they were. That is they are mostly in chronological order with the minutes of the meeting, agenda and properties considered filed together. However in some instances they are not together, but are with materials which related to the committee's work on different days.
Series G is the subject file. It is arranged alphabetically by subject.
Series H contains Dr. Campbell's research and reference cards. These cards were organized in two different ways. Campbell organized the first set in a box of 3 x 5 cards. The cards, mostly grouped according to the topic written in purple marker across the first card, were held together with rubber bands. However, Campbell did not organize these cards in any particular order within the rubber bands. The second box contained 5 x 8 cards divided by index tabs. These cards were also not in any particular order in their subdivisions.
Series I, Family Correspondence, is organized in chronological order.
Series J, Correspondence with Specific Individuals and Groups, which is organized alphabetically.
Series K, General Correspondence, is organized chronologically.
Series L, Establishing Zion, is preserved in the order in which Campbell arranged the files, and listed with the same titles he gave them. The files are as Dr. Campbell arranged them.
Series M, Photographs, is arranged by subject.
Series N, Oversize Material, contains one map.
All photographs which came to the Department of Archives and Manuscripts as a part of this collection have been transferred to the BYU Photo Archives.
