		  entitled,<emph render="italic">My Ribbon of Life,</emph>along with related
correspondence; his personal journals, 1932-1999, fourteen volumes of originals
plus typescripts; correspondence, consisting mostly of monthly family circular
letters, letters from various family members such as Philip's father and
mother, his and Olive's four LDS missionary sons, and others; materials
relating to Philip's career as a research physicist and university professor,
including correspondence, notes, calculations, drafts of writings, and reprints
of publications; and scrapbook materials relating to Hart's schooling, LDS
missionary service, and family history.</p><p>The materials are arranged in the following order: autobiography,
journals, correspondence, career materials, and scrapbook materials.
Arrangement within individual series reflects categories established by the
donor. In 2000 a final installment was added to the collection by Mr. Hart.
This material was added between the career materials and the scrapbook
materials.</p><p>The collection is a mixture of original holographs and typescripts,
and photocopies thereof. In several instances, original manuscripts were
returned to the donor and photocopies were preserved in the collection for
research use. For example, the correspondence is a mixture of both originals
and photocopies; and the scrapbook materials are entirely photocopies of items
selected from among an extensive collection in the donor's personal possession.
All original scrapbook materials were returned to the donor. (In 2000, many of
the originals were donated to Special Collections.)</p><p>The research value of the collection lies in the following areas: Hart
family history and genealogy; LDS Church and missionary history; LDS family
history; and the history of physics and collegiate teaching as reflected in
Hart's career.</p><p>There is limited information on the institutions where he was
employed, including Carbon College, Westinghouse Electric Company, Utah State
University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Lockheed Missiles and
Space Company. Documentation on LDS Church history includes information on the
following missions: Northern States, 1937; France, 1962-64; Southern Far East,
1965-67; New England and Eastern States, 1966-69; Indonesia, 1973-75; and Texas
Dallas, 1981-82. Hart began keeping a journal while he was a student at Utah
State University and continued faithfully for nearly 70 years, with sixty-seven
years of journals (1932-1999) preserved in this collection (volumes dated 1980
to 1999 were donated in 2000). He chronicled his university education through
the years of doctoral study, his summer employment and activities, including
work on his uncle's Idaho farm during the Great Depression, his LDS Church
activities, his various career opportunities, and his activities with, as well
		  as news of, his family.</p></scopecontent><controlaccess><head>Subject Tracings</head><controlaccess><head>Institutions</head><corpname>Utah State University--Faculty--History--Sources</corpname><corpname>Lockheed Aircraft Corporation--History--Sources</corpname></controlaccess><controlaccess><head>Genre/Form</head><genreform>Diaries</genreform><genreform>Autobiographies</genreform><genreform>Letters</genreform><genreform>Scrapbooks</genreform></controlaccess><controlaccess><head>Subject</head><subject>Educators--Utah--History--Sources</subject><subject>Physicists--United States--History--Sources</subject></controlaccess></controlaccess><dsc type="in-depth"><head>Container List</head><c01 level="series" tpattern="container:container:description"><head>Personal Narratives Series</head><did><unittitle>Personal Narratives
